StarBase 118 Deck Layout

Revision as of 20:04, 28 June 2006 by FltAdml. Wolf (talk | contribs) (→‎Command Center: Link to command center article.)

StarBase 118 has over 2750 decks. As such, a Deck Layout is necessary for ease of navigation.

Command Section

The Command Section, also known as the "Towers," are the highest module of the base, and serve a wide range of purposes. Most towers are leased to Starfleet divisions or civilian organizations. The Operations Command Center, known to many simply as Ops, can be seen in the Command Section as well, and is where the section gets its name. This twelve-deck area is shaped like a round tablet, and functions as the main nerve center of the starbase.

The "collar" of the command section, seen directly below the towers, includes 54 decks, and is included in command sector deck portioning. The "highest" deck is numbered deck 1. Decks below that are numbered higher (2, 3, etc.).

Keep note, however, that all of the towers located above the "collar" are numbered in the usual manner, with "1st floor" being equivalent to the ground, or lowest, floor.

Command Center

The Command Center is the main operations hub for the entire starbase. A backup command center also exists in the engineering section of the base.

  • 12: Observation
  • 11: Cafeteria
  • 9-10: Tactical holographic imaging center
  • 8: Conference rooms, office areas, tactical holographic imaging maintenance and support
  • 5-7: Tri-level, open area command center
  • 4: Communications support
  • 3: Operations support & development
  • 2: Personnel scheduling support
  • 1: Lobby, security

Executive Tower

The Executive Tower is the location of the administrative offices for the small number of top brass who call StarBase 118 their home of operations. These include FltAdml. Tristan Wolf, and Adml. Luke Reider, among others. The tower's main "levels" are located approximately 18 decks high, as the lower decks are merely support structure, escape staircases, and the turbolift shaft.

  • 25: Executive dining suite, observation deck
  • 24: Office of FltAdml. Tristan Wolf
  • 23: Offices (2, including Adml. Luke Reider)
  • 22: Offices (3)
  • 21: Offices (3)
  • 20: Offices (3)
  • 19: Conference rooms
  • 18: Secured data storage support
  • 2-17: Support structure (turbolift shaft, escape staircases)
  • 1: Lobby, security

Black Tower

Main article: StarBase 118 Black Tower

The Black Tower has a total of twenty-one levels, divided into three sections. It stands atop the "mushroom cap" of StarBase 118, and handles Intelligence for this sector. The tower itself is built as one large cylindrical structure, with two small towers joined to each side. As its name implies the black tower is completely black, due to the special treatment of the outer surface to disrupt sensors and transporter beams. All windows on the tower are specially camouflaged both from visual and sensor inspection, so the entire structure appears as one dark mass.

The Tower is restricted to Starfleet Intelligence personnel only.

Drydock

The drydock is the massive area inside the base. Due to the high amounts of traffic, most of the ship bays are usually occupied by visiting StarFleet and commercial ships.

Administration Section

The administration section functions as the hub for all officers who work on the StarBase. Many posts such as security, science/research, and support (medical) have their main offices and research centers based here. All officers in the command divison also have their offices located in this sector.

This area also houses the bulk of the starbase's educational facilities, including a distance education campus of Starfleet Academy. As such, StarBase 118 serves as the primary place where officers report to at the beginning of their day to receive their orders and assignments for the coming shift.

Habitat

The habitat sections are split almost equally at about 270 decks a piece, and house both permanent and temporary residents of the base. Both the lower and upper habitats have many unique residential settings. One example, for those requesting family housing, is the "community layout", where a number of apartments share a central atrium over a four deck span, and share a common lounge/eating area. It should also be noted that several area's of the habitat section have been adapted to suit sentient lifeforms with differing needs.

Commercial Sector

Main article: StarBase 118 Commercial Sector

This is the massive bulging dome near the middle of the structure which spans about 15% of the length of the base, and supports it's own atmosphere, complete with clouds and a simulated sun. This area is often one of the most popular places to meet, exchange or buy goods, and of course: eat. There are a number of distinct areas on the dome floor, which have grown up around hubs of activity. There is, for example, a small Klingon area, and a very active New Orleans quarter. These regions of the dome usually occupy certain streets, which have been carefully modelled from the standard architecture they are attempting to emulate to tie in with the general use of the area. Overall, the atmosphere is similar to Earth and is generally busy all hours of the day. Streets are lined with small trees, and flora is evident almost everywhere. At certain times of the day, especially around noon, finding a seat at almost any restaurant in the dome can be near impossible, and sometimes even perilous.

Decks 1042-1171

  • 1042: Commercial areas
  • 1043: Upper wait station (upper deck), commercial areas
  • 1044: Upper wait station (lower deck), commercial areas
  • 1045: Open-air commercial dome
    • There are a number of buildings within the dome which have between 2-80 floors. These buildings utilize their own internal transportation systems, and thus are numbered in the usual manner, with "1st floor" being equivalent to the ground floor.
  • 1046: Commercial dome transportation system and lower wait station
  • 1047-1048: Commercial dome transportation system support and engineering
  • 1049-1171: Commercial areas

Engineering Section

The engineering section is home to a multitude of different areas, making it somewhat misnamed. While it is true that a good deal of the computer cores and two of the fusion generators on the base are housed in this section, as well as the offices of engineering officers and dispatch points of maintenance teams, there are also many hundreds of large cargo bays, the flight bays for all of the fighter squadrons and tactical wings, and extensive research labs.

Subspace Array

This large bulbous section of the base, at the very bottom, is devoted almost entirely to communications processing and hardware for this system. Because the Starbase is a hub for media moving across the quadrant as well, it is an extremely important relay in the communications network.
