Backstory
Divya Tam was born to Starfleet Marines, who retired after the Dominion Wars. One of her mothers, Laila Jafe, is an experimental engineer. She happily tinkers, invents, and comes up with solutions to people's problems. Divya's home had a mechanic shop on the side where people came to Laila to solve problems they could not go to anyone else with. The house is on a small plot of land just outside of Taakat. Her other mother was special ops in the Dominion War. Samira told her tales from growing up in the mountains, her time in the Academy, and her early days in the fleet. She never speaks about the war. Divya's talents came from her mother, Samira, who runs a martial arts studio in the city. She mixed different forms of martial arts from many cultures to create an excellent form of defense.
Barzan II, with its harsh climate and demanding culture, instills a unique tenacity in its inhabitants. Divya, growing up in this environment, was no exception. The planet's culture is centered around strong family and community bonds and values of strength, protection, and self-reliance. During her coming-of-age ceremony, Barzan adolescents choose which of their parent's paths would be followed or if a new path would be forged. Divya, to no one's surprise, chose to follow in her warrior mother's footsteps. This is when she took on the name Tam.
Despite being a part of the federation, Barzan maintains a planetary military, with every citizen required to serve for two years. Divya's training from her parents prepared her well, so much so that after her mandatory service, she continued to serve in a classified unit for another two years, a testament to her resilience and adaptability.
She could have stayed but wanted to explore more than the bare mountains of Barzan II. Joining Starfleet gave her the opportunity to live out all the stories her parents raised her with. Divya is excited to learn more about the universe and discover how Starfleet can mold her skills. She was also interested in learning more about other cultures to enhance her oil painting.
