Cadet Dinaes

Cadet First Class Dinaes (Federation Basic: [daɪnes]) (she/her) is currently serving as a cadet in the Starfleet Academy Field Training Program aboard the USS Constitution-B. She is a Romulan/Vulcan hybrid from the planet Romulus and was born on Stardate 238104.25.

  • Taste in Clothing (off duty): From her time on Romulus, Dinaes has developed a taste for neutral, gray clothing in typical Imperial fashions.

Personality

Personality Type: ISFJ (Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging)

Manners

  • Mannerisms: Dinaes is a tough nut to crack. She doesn’t believe in Vulcan emotional repression, but has built up walls of formality and cold distance to protect herself. Despite insisting otherwise, the trauma of losing her mother and planet at such a young age has scarred her deeply. But those who do get to know her find her to be fiercely protective and perhaps a bit clingy.
  • Routines: Despite being out of the Academy and in field training, she does her best to maintain her academic schedule. Three years of being woken by her drill instructor and even longer in a very structured Vulcan home has made her used to routine.
  • Speech Patterns: Dinaes projects her voice and tries to make it sound deeper and booming to make up for her short stature.
  • Carriage and Posture: Tends to be loose and sneaking around except when senior officers are around, when she becomes very disciplined and standing at attention.

Likes and Dislikes

  • Favorite Book: The Alth'Indor, by Liviana
  • Favorite Color: Dark pink and orange, like a sunset
  • Favorite Food: Viinerine
  • Hobbies: Kal-toh, poker, other games of strategy, target shooting, reading mystery stories, martial arts, soccer, ballet
  • Fears: She saw what happened to Romulus, and has developed a newfound fear of the unknowns of the universe. The thought of a high-energy gamma burst or supernova destroying another home is a concern.
  • Pet Peeves: People who say Starfleet isn’t a military, lack or protocol, her perceived shortness
  • Religious Affiliation: None (Formerly Way of D’era)

Quarters and Workspaces

  • Quarters: Dinaes has solo quarters on Deck 18 of the USS Constitution-B. The quarters are slightly modified to give her space to work on coursework, a small area for exercises or special projects, and a few personal touches she has allowed herself.
  • Tactical Analysis Lab Eleven: When not shadowing her training officers or observing bridge duty, Dinaes can be found in Tactical Analysis Lab Eleven on Deck 11 of the USS Constitution-B, working on assignments and tactical simulations.

History

Family Background

Dinaes is the daughter of Dolahk and Vulcan diplomat T’Lora (adopted after birth by Dolahk and Dorrena). Dolahk came from a powerful Romulan clan. He was a fifth generation senator and descendant of a 19th century praetor of the Romulan Star Empire. Dolahk’s grandfather was the first to propose Reunification with the Vulcans in the senate. It was not well-received. While it impacted his reputation, his political career survived. His son and grandson would go on to be covert Reunificationists, working behind the scenes.

Dorrena’s mother and both sets of grandparents were in the Tal Shiar. However, she had a deep sense of loyalty, duty, and honesty that she could not set aside. Rather than pursuing a role in the secretive intelligence service, she joined the Romulan Navy. She would eventually reach the rank of subcommander and served as both chief engineer and first officer. She swore an oath to always protect Romulus, no matter the cost.

However, Dorrena was not her birth mother. Her Reunificationist father had met a Vulcan named T’Lora. They had an affair, and the result was Dinaes. Dolahk and Dorrena had already discussed adoption. So, he ensured that Dinaes found her way to the right place and time for the couple to adopt. He considered letting T’Lora raise her as a Vulcan, but T’Lora’s secret life living underground would not be a healthy environment for the little girl.

Childhood

Dinaes grew up in the lap of luxury on Romulus. With a senator father and career military officer mother, she attended a prestigious school and took part in activities like ballet and martial arts training. But it came with disadvantages too. Life in the capital was under the watchful eye of Tal Shiar operatives. Any misbehavior was met with swift and stern discipline. It was overall a good early childhood, but very controlled. Self-expression and acting out were simply not allowed.

Evacuation from Romulus

In 2387, she was awoken by her father in the middle of the night. He told her to pack a bag and not ask questions. She grabbed her belongings and saw her father removing his senator’s robes and opting for a simple civilian tunic. The two of them fled to the Central Hall of Records, where the physical archives were being loaded onto a cargo ship. A friend of Dolahk allowed them aboard the ship, which left Romulus before dawn. Less than 24 hours later, the Hobus supernova would consume the Romulan home system and destroy it. Dinaes’s mother had refused to flee from her post and was killed when Romulus was destroyed.

Father and daughter fled to Bilire VI, where other Romulan survivors had set up a hastily-assembled colony. They remained there for less than a year before a plague and other issues destabilized their temporary home. The starfleet ship USS Independence-A arrived in 2388, giving Dinaes her first look at Starfleet. She was impressed by how the Starfleet crew helped keep order and would eventually be influenced to see Starfleet as a worthy alternative to the Imperial Navy.

Dolahk wanted Dinaes to grow up in more stable conditions than their refugee status would provide. That was when he revealed a secret to her. She was not, as she was led to believe, the daughter of him and Dorrena. Her father was a Reunificationist, and had been working with Vulcan agents on Romulus since at least 2360. Dinaes was born after an affair between Dolahk and T’Lora, a Vulcan “cowboy diplomat” who had been part of underground reunification efforts. Her presence became more public after the Dominion War, where she remained until being exposed by the Tal Shiar in 2382. Dolahk had always wanted to tell her the truth and let her meet her birth mother, but had never been sure when was the right time. The incident on Bilire VI convinced him that it might be safer for Dinaes to be on Vulcan while things in Romulan space settled down.

Life on Vulcan

Dolahk and Dinaes arrived on Vulcan and were greeted by T’Lora, who had married in 2384. T’Lora and her new husband Silac agreed to take Dinaes in. Her father, struggling with feelings of cowardice for abandoning the planet, decided that he had to return to help his people but promised to keep in regular contact. Dinaes moved in with her mother T’Lora, stepfather Silac, and younger half-sister Fara in the city of Kir.

She did well with Vulcan education. While not believing in emotional suppression, the strict and authoritative private school she attended on Romulus was no less structured or academically rigorous as a Vulcan learning center. Dinaes learned to play chess with her mother and would attend classes in Suus Mahna with her stepfather. Vulcan social life was more difficult, but T’Lora was understanding and didn’t push her too hard to be a typical Vulcan child.

While on Vulcan, Dinaes also went through extensive therapy for the trauma of losing her homeworld. She would take up with nightmares frequently and missed her mother dearly. The fear of an uncaring universe wiping out another planet stuck with her. As a teenager, she researched high-energy gamma bursts, supernovas, cosmology, and other galactic-scale threats that could again destroy life as she knew it. Something she has never fully gotten over.

Dinaes’s dream of being a military officer remained. She spent many days at Vulcan Space Central, watching Starfleet ships pass and imagining what it would be like for one of those ships to be her’s. She read all about the greats like Archer, Kirk, Pike, Janeway, and the newly retired Admiral Picard. In the meantime, her father had joined the Romulan Republic as a commander. But some of what she had learned about Romulan history during her schooling left her doubting her own people and seeing Starfleet as the better option. She failed her first entrance exam at the selection stage, being beaten out by a Human male on the other cultures and psych tests.

Starfleet Academy

At Starfleet Academy, Dinaes impressed her instructors and quickly became a candidate for command school. She is a tactical/security double major and more or less abandoned the idea of electives. Instead, she chose to pack her schedule with as many practical classes as she could find that might come in handy. As such, she is on track to graduate with an astounding three minors: helm/nav, com/ops, and psychology. Given her performance and her obvious appetite for extra coursework, Captain Mercer approved her for both the field training program and advanced tactical training. She was assigned Lieutenant JG Lystra as her field training officer and made her way to the USS Constitution-B. She has a year of standard coursework left as well as another two years of advanced tactical training. If successful, she could depart from field training with her pick of assignments and a bright future in the command track.
