Personal History

Kai was born as the only child to Jason and Moira Sims on stardate 237606.26 on the small Tekaris V mining colony that had recently been settled following the close of the Dominion War and the rapid expansion of civilian settlements into regions of space abandoned by the Cardassian Union.

A hands-on learner, Kai developed a love for engineering from his father, who would often come home and pose simple engineering related problems he encountered or heard of throughout the day for Kai to solve. As Kai grew older and began to express more of an interest in engineering, his father would occasionally bring home broken equipment or tools to allow Kai to get firsthand experience with assembling and disassembling various components and parts that he would likely have to work with in the future.

Kai’s mother was a geologist and was often away from home for weeks to months at a time to conduct geological or mineral surveys. When she returned, she often had stories of alien worlds to share with Kai who was all too eager to hear about life beyond the barren environment of his home. The stories Kai’s mother brought home fed Kai’s desire to see and explore alien environments but also led to his increasing discontent with being restrained to the colony.

Shortly after his 20th birthday, a disastrous mining accident resulted in permanent scarring both physically and emotionally for Kai and the settlement as a whole. The following year he joined Starfleet Academy and graduated with a specialty in components engineering and a minor in geology. During his time at the academy, Kai developed a deep interest in the design of antique technology and how tools and machines now considered primitive had such major effects on the progress of a species.
