Relationships

As a specialist working in Engineering most often it is Sirok that Kortho found himself working closely with. The Vulcan and the half-Klingon often do not see eye to eye when it comes to what's funny, but they do work well together.

Personal History

His mother and father never expected their relationship to be a long term one nor had they expected a child to come of it. An agreement was made shortly after Kortho’s birth that his mother would raise him, with allowances for him to spend time each year with his father to know both worlds he could call home.

Growing up it was assumed he would one day join his father’s house as a warrior or Targ handler and from ages 7 to 17 all he could talk about for months out of the year was looking forward too or what he had been up too while staying at his Klingon side of the family’s estates. Things changed rather abruptly just before he turned 18, leading to his joining starfleet instead. To many who are aware of internal Klingon politics a simple reason might be that the house of Korthan was seen as vassal house that only raised Targs and decent soldiers.

Outwardly Kortho shows little love of his Klingon family or culture beyond practicing Mok'bara and liking gagh, going so far as to keep using his mother’s surname to distance himself a bit further from his klingon side. It can be a touchy subject for him but he is used to getting asked things like “what kind of Klingon stuff do you follow?” which he often gives glib responses and tries to change the subject back to a work related topic.

Since joining starfleet he has worked to make his vocation his honor, throwing himself into service. His first assignment saw little action being on an extended planetary survey of a sector of the beta quadrant, he was an alpha shift operations officer on the bridge under the Chief HCO. He found the job demanding enough withall the science officers on him for more time on the sensors and more power for their labs, each solar system they surveyed saw a different set vying for more.

His second posting on the Apollo was more exciting though he was one of many Engineers in the vast department on the massive ship. There he had time to delve deeper into his secondary academy study of non warp faster than light theory. This effort directly led to his third and current posting aboard the USS Thor. The vesta class starship tested the now more commonplace QSD and they still housed some of the most advanced versions of the drive. Kortho never felt more at home than he has on the Thor, in his position as QSD specialist. Though more than once his Operations background has come in handy in his thinking, and during his first mission on the Thor suggested collaboration between departments to solve an issue on board the ship.

2397 has marked the tenth year since he has seen anyone on the Klingon side of his family, beyond a yearly letter from his half-sister. The letter was usually a telling of the glorious stories of minor skirmishes and Targ breeding reports, along with any promotions, births, deaths or small acts of honor that the House of Korthan had achieved that year. Except at the end where Kathra always includes a personal request he apologize and return home.
