• Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Anna moved with her family to California at the age of five when her father took a position at the Marin County Starfleet Yards.

• Anna Cortez is almost supernaturally cheerful and is rarely seen without a genuine smile. Some find this perennial perkiness irritating, which Anna doesn't really understand.

• Extremely intelligent, but she's "book smart" - meaning all of her knowledge is theoretical rather than practical. She can become flustered when faced with a situation that doesn't fully conform to a textbook-style step-by-step solution.

• Anna has always been an over-achiever. She graduated high school at the age of fifteen with a 98.7% average. Though she was offered scholarships for several prestigious universities, she petitioned for and was granted admission to Starfleet Academy at the age of sixteen.

• Despite her generally upbeat attitude, Cortez's confidence can be easily shaken. As on over-achiever, most things have come easy to Cortez thus far in her young life, be it her early graduation from high school, her early admission to the Academy, or being one of a handful of cadets selected for the field training pilot program. When faced with failure or rejection, she usually doesn't know how to react or how to deal with it.

• The experience of Operation Bright Star, during which Cortez remained on the main MVA module of the USS Independence, shook her up a great deal. Though she no longer has nightmares about the event, as the day approaches where she will be assigned to a starship, Cortez wonders how the experience will effect her in a crisis situation.

Important Relationships

• David Whale: Whale was previously assigned as Cortez's field training mentor. She was proud to have trained with someone she can look up to -- though he may not agree with her assessment -- and she feels she learned a great deal during her time with him. Privately, she had worried Whale would hand her off to someone else, just like her original training officer on Midway Repair Facility, but that fear was quickly put to rest.
