Jora Kalis was born on Bajor, just a few years after the Cardassian withdrawal from the system. His mother, Rhandra Corae, a Betazoid, moved to Bajor as a relief worker in the final years of the occupation, ending up becoming a hospital administrator in the post-occupation era. His father, Jora Tohr, was quite spiritual and was associated with a variety of religious orders on Bajor, moving frequently between sects during the occupation and, finally working his way up to being an aide of one of the more prominent Vedeks in the Assembly. Although Tohr isn't directly linked to the resistance, his parents claim to have met in the aftermath of the Kendra Valley Massacre in the Kendra Province of Bajor.
Jora was raised in the Bajoran faith and follows the Prophets but his Betazoid heritage was not neglected. His childhood was spend mostly on Bajor but his adolescent schooling was split between the two worlds, mostly spending time with relatives on Betazed to develop his empathic and telepathic abilities.
Jora became interested in medicine and science and enrolled in a medical school on Betazed. It was there he learned of opportunities in Starfleet, applying to Starfleet Academy. During his time at the academy, he applied to and was accepted into a Federation-sponsored medical mission/externship on a heavily populated Ferengi commerce world where he continued to practice his comparative xenobiology medical skills. This delayed his graduation by a year but greatly enhanced his exposure to other races and cultures. If not for medicine, he's convinced he'd be an anthropologist.
Upon returning, he completed clinical rotations and added a biomedical sciences track to his studies at the Academy. Most recently, he completed his Starfleet Medical Academy internship on Earth and received his medical degree.
- Official Transcript: Undergraduate Records
Jora used his time at the Academy to fully explore his interests. Although he enrolled and immediately focused in science/xenobiology, he availed himself of as many open lectures and seminars as possible. This slightly signifies his reluctance to commit to a life in science, particularly biological sciences. He has a strong interest in intercultural studies and linguists but was never fully able to explore them. For the most part, he remained motivated to stay the course and complete his degree in xenobiology, on a path to medical school.

At Starfleet Medical Academy, Jora applied for and was accepted to a Federation-sponsored training externship on the Ferengi commerce world Granor. Assigned to a clinic in a busy port city, Jora was exposed to a wide variety of species, cultures and medical curiosities. He counts this experience as one of the defining moments of his life thus far.
His primary specialty is in community health (both from a primary care and health management perspective) and biomedical research.
