Sim

((Ship's Library - USS Independence-A))

((OOC: I know we're supposed to just read all the posts but I thought in response to Cody's last message I'd try and *ahem* attract people to get those creative juices going a bit by putting an open tag on my title. You can backsim this if you like too. What does your character think of this Eric Da'Pan fellow? What was he/she doing in the library?))

::Eric Da'Pan sat on the desk in the library, reading the latest edition of the journal Federation Astronomy. Stellar nurseries. What were they writing about this time? He had to admit that he still instinctively looked for his name in the citations, hoping to see his work propagating somewhere. Nobody had cited his thesis. The small number of articles he'd written for the journal were still in the process of being peer reviewed for publication. They would be out of the question.

That was okay. Now that he was finished being narcissistic, Eric got on to reading the article. "Gravimetric distortion theory and its effects on Theta class Stellar Nurseries: An Historical Perspective." He'd first encountered gravimetric distortion theory as an undergrad at the university of Olympus Mons on Mars. It had been a small campus but worth the tuition. He'd been the last to leave the holo lecture hall that day. Even the professor had left but Eric had been so fascinated by the seven sisters, each holding her own crumpled piece of spacetime inside her cradle of gas and dust. Eric had walked around inside the simulation the professor had left running. Little nebulae had jutted out, some like blankets others - such as the one near Merope - like ancient crystal castles gently indicating the newborn light.

He'd been interrupted.::

Maintenance guy: S-somebody said there's a malfunction in this room?

::Eric felt a bit annoyed but at the same time the Pleiades made him too calm to get angry.::

Da'Pan: Really? Need me to leave?

Maintenance guy: W-well if you could yes.

Da'Pan: Not a problem.

::The man had been a slightly overweight technician apparently in his early thirties. Eric had gotten to know the guy over the months and years and--

Just then someone walked over and said,::

Who: Response?

::Taken out of his reverie, his mind was too calm to allow him to get angry. Eric thought a moment about what this new arrival had said. He supposed he really didn't know why he was here in the library. He could have been spending his off duty hours in the holodeck. It was still fun to walk around inside the model stellar nurseries. Maybe he could go and see the Pleiades again. After all, the misty nebulae that adorned each of the sisters were so magical to walk through.::

Da'Pan: Just reading. What brings you here?

Who: Response?

Da'Pan: Really? Welcome to the Independence, ensign. I'm Eric Da'Pan. I just got here myself.

::He extended a hand.::

Da'Pan: What brings you here?

::Eric could tell he was going to get along great with this person. After all, he got along well with anybody that crossed his path. He figured he had hundreds of friends now. They hung there across space like stars holding each other together in a cluster, the mysterious dark matter of friendship and social grace attracting them to him and him to them. The rippling space time of a lasting acquaintence and of those meaningful conversations spread between them all like...like... the effects of gravimetric distortions on theta class stellar nurseries.::

Commentary

I started this story arc as a way of helping Tyriden to express his character more. Ens. Da'Pan is also a great character to have in one's back pocket to use as a kind of level-headed mindset. Writing his character is calming and even fun, as you get to feel what it's like to be an adept conversationalist and someone who cares.
