His return has been somewhat chaotic, to say the least, which wasn't much of a surprise. However, the worst was yet to come. During an investigation about a virus in klingon colonies, he went undercover with Quinn Reynolds to find a contact who could provide them with a sample of the virus. But the plan backfired and they both were captured by klingon authorities and sent to Rura Penthe. Prison life was harsh to begin with, but it was worst there. Between the gangs wanting to recruit them and those just wanting to beat them up because they were Starfleet officers, The Ram had his share of fights and bruises. But sooner or later he had to get in over his head and finally got a bad beating that damaged his ocular implants (and most of his face for that matter), making him blind once again. Blind in a prison was far from a good situation, even more so considering that he had been Quinn's muscle since the beginning and he couldn't even walk by himself anymore. But thanks to some good samaritan named Ishan and a somewhat weird creature called Toriel, they somehow managed to escape in abandoned mine tunnels until they were reached by a rescue party sent for them. | |||
Back on the USS Crazyhorse, the ship used to come and get them, they were given the opportunity to participate in a war game simulation which made him really enthusiastic because he was on the team with the least chance of winning. The underdog team, as he called it, was a great opportunity to show his creative skills when it came down to doing miracles with nothing. And he found quite funny the context in which he would've been able to say that he beat the other team blindfolded since he had not recovered his sight yet. But his luck being what it had been lately, the derelict ship his team was assigned to was captured by creatures living in a nearby gas giant and experimented on. Again, he found himself completely useless and more of a burden to his colleagues since he couldn't even get any idea of what was happening around him. And it was one of the almost inexistant times where The Ram actually lost it. He had finally broke for a short while, but managed to pull together before it got too out of hand. After those events, it was obvious that the crew needed a vacation and somehow someone thought that Vulcan would be a nice touristic spot to visit. After he made sure to get his sight back, he got down on the surface of Vulcan to try and consider that place like somewhere he could find something fun to do, but Admiral Rocar had obviously decided otherwise since he had made arrangements for him to spend his leave at the Vulcan Institute of Meditation, apparently being the first human to be granted such a privilege. At first he was reluctant, but he decided to humor Administrator T'Pok and followed him to the institute where he met Soral, the one who had the misfortune of being assigned as his instructor for the duration of his stay. But it seemed that both men made a connexion since they both influenced each other a lot. Rigorous training ensued since the timeframe was very short, but Ramirez being a fast learner and unable to back down from any challenge, and with Soral being most curious about the learning experience he would get from teaching a man like Ramirez, The Ram was able to make tremendous progress in a very short amount of time. He had found some inner peace about many things he had buried deep inside of him for many years and found himself changed overall. He walked out of the institute a new man, much to the disbelief of his colleagues. The one they had come to believe unsalvageable by Starfleet standards was now as zen as a buddhist, almost Vulcan-like to be exact. Soral's influence had been strong in itself, but they both agreed that a vulcan mind meld would improve the learning curve and help Ramirez find inner peace faster and more efficiently. But the long mind meld had that effect of programming some of the vulcans' calm and formal traits into Ramirez's behavior. He was now calm, reserved, polite, formal.
