Relationships

Family

All Dokkaran are born fully mature underneath the branches of the Vizinyian trees and because they do not sexually reproduce they have a unique outlook about family. Nicu has no particular mother or father who created him, rather he believes the Lady is his creator and sees every other member of the species as distant cousins. He may not have a close relationship with many of them or seek to form social units but he will greet all equally and with the same openness.

Background

Nico Icavoc was born fully mature beneath the branches of a Vizinyian tree on stardate 2341.02.06. He spent the first few months of his life hunting in groups while fine tuning his abilities and becoming fully self-sufficient. From there he spent the first 5 years of his life venturing out alone and defining his interests. A scientific curiosity and desire to explore drew him deeper and deeper into the wild areas where he would study and at times hunts the flora and fauna around him, taking only what he needed to survive. In the times between these short expeditions he would spend his time in the capital city of Luzen studying life sciences and exchanging ideas with like-minded Dokkaran.

In 2347 he experienced his first chase, although all that he has revealed about it to date is that he was the chased and that the chase lasted almost a year before it ended. In the 6 years that followed his expeditions into the wild became much longer and he ventured much further afield in search of the mysterious and dangerous endangered dragons. During the course of his work and conservation efforts he became a leading expert in his field and the work that he did brought the most endangered species of dragons back to a sustainable level.

He recognised that it would take maintenance and monitoring to ensure that the dragon population neither dipped back to it’s previous levels or grew out of hand. Neither of which were desirable outcomes, so in an effort to get others interested and involved in the plight of the dragons he returned to the capital city of Luzen once again in 2354. He began to teach others about the dragons, survival skills needed to work in the far out dangerous areas, and the conservation work he had done.

When he wasn’t teaching he continued to study sciences, his thirst for knowledge was unquenchable and it was during this time he became interested in another Dokkaran. This time in the role of Chaser he pursued the courtship for almost 4 years before it came to an end. He continued teaching, studying and learned to paint for another two years before returning to the field in 2360.

Nicu was on what was a relatively well resourced, long term expedition with a group of students who were similarly dedicated to his work. They had been doing some long term studies of a smaller species of dragon and mapping breeding grounds when they accidentally came across something they’d never seen before. What happened from there remains a mystery except to the Dokkaran except to say that there was a near fatal incident with a never before seen species of dragon, involving several team members. So in 2372 the expedition was recalled early as a result of the incident and those injured spent the next year in recovery so severe had it been.

Nicu was still in recovery when he heard about a great war in the greater universe, something he had not previously given much thought or attention to. When he first heard of it he was unconcerned and largely uninterested. They had never been touched by such problems and concerns before and it seemed inconceivable that the war could come to them. As the war gathered momentum though and news filtered back to him he did begin to feel concern. He was worried that it would come to them and that they would be unable to adequately defend themselves. He didn’t understand the mindset behind the conflict either since disputes among his people had never come to a violent outcome and crime was non existent. How could beings live like that? What was their motivation? he wondered. He wondered if there was a way he could bring harmony to them or at least learn enough so that his people might be able to deal with the threat should it come to them. He learned about the Federation and Starfleet, and began to wonder where he might fit in.

In 2373 he made an application to join Starfleet and although he was too late to be accepted that year, he was able to take the entrance exams and was eventually accepted to be part of the following years intake. He studied at Starfleet Academy to be a Tactical Officer because even though he had a scientific background, he was primarily concerned about learning about the threats posed by the Dominion War. Ultimately it ended before his training concluded but the training opened up his eyes to a universe of danger. He continued with his studies and was given his first posting in 2378, after his cadet cruise concluded.

Nicu found these first years in training and upon his ship to be very difficult. He found other species very different to him in the way they interacted with each other and their social expectations. He received a number of discommendations for lack of respect for the chain of command, which bothered him greatly. As a rule he kept to himself, preferring to deliver his role and then spend his free time in solitude, reflecting upon what he’d learnt and painting pictures from memory of places he’d visited to alleviate home-sickness.

In 2381 he was proud to receive his first promotion and for a short time it felt as if he might be settling in. However he started suffering from seasonal affective disorder, this combined with his difficulties in fully integrating with the rest of the crew made him begin to resent them. Special lights, some soil and plants were put into his quarters and it went a long way to making him feel better. He enjoyed looking after the plants, particularly a bonzai tree that was gifted to him and once again he settled down for a while. Disaster struck again after a few improved months where he began to shut down physically. Discussions took place between the young tactical officer, the medical professionals caring for him and command about the best solution and future of his career. He was granted a years LOA to return home, during which time he considered whether to continue his career or retire and do other things. He had achieved much of what he had set out to do when he originally joined Starfleet.

After linking in with The Lady and spending some time recovering his strength he made a decision about his career. He did want to stay with Starfleet and felt there were still a lot of opportunities there for him, but he wanted to take things in a different direction and talked about the possibility of transferring to science. It was agreed and he finished the remained of his LOA on Ceata doing a distance learning program before transferring to Starfleet Academy the following year to finish the remainder of his training to become a scientist. The whole process took a reduced time of three years as he did not had to re-sit core courses that he had already completed. On completion of these studies he was posted out into the fleet once more, this time serving as a science officer.

The changed seemed to really suit him and he had fewer issues on his new ship, be it down to changes in the way he dealt with things, or the slightly different culture of his new crew. He continued to keep his head down and because he’d had special adjustments made to his quarters shortly after arriving he was happier, healthier and more productive. This was no doubt an important contributing factor to his promotion in 2387 to Lieutenant.

A bad injury in 2388 saw an important supporting wooden ‘bone’ in his arm break and because it could not be healed quickly by conventional means it took a very long time to heal. Work progressed, although a bit more slowly as he had to learn to use his other arm more and rely upon others for assistance at times.

In 2389 he reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander but some tough missions, combined with a lot of crew changes led to friction and problems once again. He began to think about retirement once more and was very much in two minds about what to do. Having been away from his homeworld a long time he missed it and felt an increasingly strong pull to return, so he requested another LOA and took another break from service in 2390, this time lasting half as long. Back home he linked in with The Lady to share his experience so that Dokkaran coming behind him might benefit from his experiences. Ultimately he felt that there was some unfinished business and decided to return to service.

On his return in 2391, placement officers reviewing his service history felt he had acquired the sort of skillset and experience that would allow him to slip into the role of mission specialist. The idea of it appealed to him greatly and helped him find a new sense of excitement about his work with Starfleet. Several months into his posting he has been reassigned to the USS Apollo. Where some people might feel a sense of sadness at leaving behind their friends and familiar colleagues Nicu feels fairly indifferent about that aspect of it.

USS Apollo-A Service History

Pertania Prime

When Nicu Icavoc arrived via shuttle at the USS Apollo-A after being reassigned the crew was mid-mission and much of the senior team was off ship. Rather than head straight to his quarters to settle in he decided to stay on the bridge and help Lieutenant Rune Jolara who had been left to direct things on the bridge. He manned the science station, helped to figure out a way to get past the jamming signal, picked up unusual activity on the ground on sensors and subsequently helped figure out what it was. When the ship received a message in binary from near the site of the unusual activity he helped figure out the best way of dealing with it. Fortunately all hands returned to the ship before the situation deteriorated further.
