Background

Jacob did not have what you would call the ideal childhood. He never knew his parents and bounced around from “family member” to foster care back to “family member” for much of his childhood. He has yet to learn the truth about what happened to his parents and the search for the truth is something that has always haunted him.

His rough upbringing brought about rough edges on his personality. He had a hard time getting close to people because every time he did he would move away to another home. His life was filled with constant instability. To cope he acted out. Using what he knew about electronics he would build tiny devices. Some annoyed, some did damage. As he grew older and his knowledge grew more sophisticated so did his devices. Every time he built and used one of his devices the family he was with would send him away to the next family.

When he was eight his neighbor, retired Starfleet officer Dalton Jones, took Jacob under his wing. He too had a troubled childhood and had found answers in Stafleet. He encouraged Jacob to follow a similar path. Jacob liked the idea. He still built his devices and caused problems for the families his was living with but now, instead of doing to it make everyone else feel his chaotic life, he did it with his sights set on Starfleet. Even as Jacob continued to move he always stayed in touch with Dalton.

During his time at the academy Jacob still never really learned to open up and get close to people so he occupied his time with his studies. The sciences weren’t easy but they had answers and it was this simplicity that he loved. His life never seemed to have answers, just more questions and problems to solve. Engineering gave him a chance to find answers and help people.
