Hikaru comes from a Starfleet family and has spent much of her life growing up on outposts, ships and stations - wherever her parents were posted so she doesn’t see Earth or any other specific place as home. She spent the first years of her life in Japan as her mother had some maternity leave and her father had an assignment to the Lunar Colony and was able to come home most weekends. She made her first move at 8 to the USS Endeavour.
To her, home is where you rest your head and it's what you make it. She's seen the highs and lows and is quite familiar with life among the stars. She considers herself fortunate to have seen so many planets and met so many different aliens - all with their own unique perspective on the universe. Her parents still serve Starfleet and her older, who is quite protective of her, joined Starfleet a few years ahead of her and is serving board the USS Triton.
While she enjoys learning and studying Hikaru does not have a natural aptitude for it and is academically not a high flier. While she scores highly in creative subjects she achieves more average scores in other areas, such as science. Her weakest area is mathematics and she covers her embarrassment surrounding this deficiency (as well as any other perceived weaknesses) with jokes.
She knows the dangers of life in StarFleet only too well and trained as a counsellor hoping to provide much-needed support to the Federation's brightest, hardworking citizens. While not incredibly ambitious by nature, Hikaru wants to find her place and settle into her first real assignment after a year long cadet cruise putting theory into practice and learning what it's like to be the one in the uniform in a more real but still protected environment.
While she is looking for romance and fun, Hikaru has no real desire to settle down. Should the right person come along her feelings might change but her main priority is to make friends and have a good time. Her current mindset is all about working hard, playing hard and experiencing the wonders of the galaxy.

Hikaru Sumiye met a number of prominent counsellor's and medical professionals at a conference about gender expression and gender issues across a selection of species ne was presenting on Starbase 118 in 2387. It was quite an eye opener as coming from such a sophisticated and advanced society it was often easy to think such concerns were long banished, and for many species they were but for others, there was still a little work to do.
At an after party, when things started to die down late that night and people started heading back to their dorms or off home, Sumiye had a unique opportunity to share with Renos a little more deeply about herself and her customs. The J'naii, who had just finished an internship after training to be a doctor, seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say even though she was merely a 1st year cadet. That was something that stuck with and inspired her.
Hikaru and Noshka share living quarters on the USS El Corazón, which they were both assigned to in 2392. They were both newly graduated officers joining the ship at the same time, navigating the ups and downs of their first Starfleet assignment together. Things look promising after an awkward first meeting where Hikaru shared some of her living customs regarding the use of footwear and the Ferengi agreed to honour the tradition.
