Garnet, a class-M world with a small refuling station along the Tholian border, is taken by the Tholians. The USS Kodiak and USS Excalibur are dispatched to confront the Tholians. The two ships defeat the Tholian vessels, but during the battle a Tholian assassin mortally wounds Cpt. Rendary, and the Kodiak is damaged beyond repair.
