The USS Chin'toka is an Akira class starship under the command of Commander Serala. In service for over two decades, Starfleet decided to update the Akira-class to better reflect the requirements of the service. The upgrades made to the class (dubbed the 2397 variant) aimed to make the class a multi-mission capable vessel. The USS Chin'toka (NCC-97187) is the first of the 2397 Akira class variants, boasting an updated propulsion system, a newly developed mission pod, state-of-the-art scientific and medical facilities along with an expanded complement of auxiliary craft.

After conducting a mission in late 2399 in the Lanaxa system, in which the crew of the Chin'toka strained the ship's capabilities to its limits in an ultimately successful attempt at diverting a neutron star's course so that it would not pass through and destroy the heavily populated star system, the Chin'toka was critically damaged and sent back to the Utopia Planitia shipyards for extensive repairs. At that time, the USS Astraeus was reassigned to the Par'tha Expanse in her place.

The ship is named in honour of those Starfleet and allied officers who lost their lives in the Cardassian system, Chin'toka, during the First and Second Battles of the aforenamed system during the Dominion War.

During a mission to divert the course of a potentially deadly neutron star from passing through a heavily inhabited star system, which would have seen all life there disrupted permanently, the Chin'toka was critically damaged and was required to return to spacedock for emergency repairs. Her crew were reassigned to the Galaxy class USS Astraeus.

In 2401, the Chin'toka was relaunched under the command of Commander Serala during the Frontier Day crisis.
