Ezra was born on Trillius Prime as the eldest of three children during the height of the Dominion War. His mother, Kala, worked for the Trill Private Service. Ezra grew up admiring his mother and her commitment to the safety of the Trill people while serving in the Private Service. From age 5 to 11, his mother worked at the Trill Embassy on Vulcan, where he crossed paths with Is’Kah, only to be forgotten until adulthood.

When Ezra was 11, his family moved to Earth, where his mother provided security to the Trill Embassy. Ezra struggled to fit in on Earth and had difficulties making friends. This led to a struggle with his grades, primarily in the sciences, and he was held back a grade.

At the age of 19, Coben began to pressure him to join the Symbiont Institute to become joined. While debating if he would join, he discovered Terran Martial arts. Ezra always knew he wanted to follow in his mother's footsteps, but this transformed into a desire for Starfleet. However, his lack of aptitude for the sciences worried him that he would struggle to graduate.

To prepare for his entrance into Starfleet Academy, he took remedial courses in coding, encryption, survival training, zero-g, and various weapons. While at the Academy, he continued his defensive training and joined the chess club to help train his mind and social skills.
