Background
From his birth, Kt'k has always been an outlier. A genetic accident. A square peg trying to fit into a round hole. He didn't produce enough pheromones, making his far less efficient in a team than the other male workers, and while he was loyal and obedient to his Queen, he had all those strange, non-conforming thoughts and wild impulses that always nudged him in a different direction... When he reached the age of adulthood, at 13, it was no surprise that he would be among the number of the unattached males; after all, who wanted to pass that kind of heritage to her offspring? When he heard that his Queen ordered him offworld, to go and serve the Federation, he saw that as an exile sentence. And then, he discovered that he was to join, not a worker unit as he first thought, but Starfleet Academy, specifically the Starfleet Engineering School.
On his own. Alone, among aliens. This was worse than exile. But, as every male should, he bowed and obeyed.
It turned out that having learnt to function (if inefficiently by Remmilian standards) among his fellow workers without the help of pheromones had made him uniquely suited to being part of a team with aliens. It turned out that the impulses he'd always struggled with were actually considered a beneficial trait among Starfleet officers, as long as they were tempered by loyalty. "Initiative", they called it. It turned out that among aliens, immersed in the study of a technology far beyond what he was used to, Kt'k had found, againsta ll his preconceptions, a place to thrive. And now, when he's alone with his thoughts at the end of the day, Kettick (as his alien friends - friends! - call him) sometimes wonders if Queens make mistakes at all. Or if, sometimes, they simply find themselves in need of something unusual to plug a square hole.
