Commander Jaelyne Isa
"The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting."
— Sun Tzu

Commander Jaelyne Isa, a Joined Trill female, is currently serving as the First Officer aboard the USS Chin'toka, NCC-97187.

Jaelyne Isa was born Jaelyne Enzol, taking the Isa name when she was joined with the Isa symbiont following the death of its previous host, Ranil Isa. Jaelyne started her career in Starfleet as a ship's counselor but quickly found herself drawn into the world of diplomacy, taking a position with the Starfleet Diplomatic Corps. Following the departure of the previous First Officer of the USS Chin'toka, Jaelyne was tapped to replace the Half-Romulan due to her extensive work in diplomacy and the previous host's skills in Strategic Operations, two skills sets that were felt would be most useful given the current political climate of the Par'tha Expanse.

Background

Jaelyne (JAY-leen) Enzol was born the second of four children to Dashru and Renna Enzol and had always been an outgoing and energetic child. She had a natural talent for getting people to like her and to see her point of view on topics. Even as a young child, she found she could convince even her parents to see her way of things, though how much of that was genuine and how much was her parents being generous was often in question. Jaelyne rarely had enemies, and usually those did not last long as she would find ways to make amends or settle their differences that didn’t involve the use of physical force. That’s not to say that Jaelyne didn’t have her share of arguments, or even fights, but usually they didn’t last long.

Like most young Trill, Jaelyne dreamed of being joined with a Symbiont and had studied hard to get accepted into the Initiate program, earning degrees in xenology, sociology, political science, psychology, anthropology, and archeology. She was about complete with her training, and had submitted herself to the Symbiosis Commission for consideration to be joined, but received a crushing disappointment when her application was rejected. No reason was given to her other than she did not meet their qualifications, but what those qualifications were that she failed to meet she was never told.

Dejected, but determined not to let all her training go to waste, Jaelyne joined Starfleet at the age of 22 and graduated from the Academy four years later as a Counselor. She served for 2 years aboard the USS Temperance before being recruited by the Starfleet Diplomatic Corps in recognition of her work in several diplomatic missions her ship had conducted. For the next four years, she would be based out of Earth, but would spend more time in the field on various diplomatic assignments than she actually spent on Earth.

On Stardate 239711.14, while on assignment with the USS Karbel-C, in which she and the ship’s Strategic Operations Officer, a Joined Trill by the name of Ranil Isa (RAH-nil EE-sah), along with several other officers from the ship, were involved in a shuttle accident when the onboard systems suddenly began to fail. The cause was later determined to be the result of a collision with a subspace filament that had disrupted their systems long enough for the shuttle to lose control and plummet into the atmosphere of a nearby L-Class planet. They were able to get the shuttle down, but it suffered catastrophic damage in the impact, and three people were fatally injured, including Ranil Isa. Although Jaelyne had suffered minor injuries herself, she knew that if the Isa symbiont was to be saved, she was its only chance. She pleaded with the doctor to do an emergency transplant so she could keep Isa alive until it could be transplanted again into a new host, a request that the doctor was forced to consent to if the Isa symbiont was to be saved. However, as things would turn out, it would take eight days for the survivors to be rescued and by then, her joining with the Isa symbiont had been complete and she was unable to be separated from it without dying. As it appeared that the joining had been successful, the Symbiosis Commission was later forced to reluctantly agree to allow the joining to remain in place.

Now Jaelyne Isa, she spent several months trying to assimilate all the new personalities and to separate herself from the other previous hosts, but she never really managed to succeed. And this, she learned, was fairly normal. She wasn’t her old self anymore, but an amalgamation of all of them. The key was knowing which was from her and which was from a previous host, and which host that was. This was the purpose behind the zhian’tara and would provide her the means for dealing with the assorted memories of the previous hosts, though she has yet to actually perform this ceremony.

Starfleet Command, however, also saw a rather unique opportunity present itself for the young woman, who had managed to rise to the rank of Commander by this point. It seemed that in the Par’tha Expanse, even as the Federation worked to establish a diplomatic presence there, some of the local governments - most notably, the Valcarian Imperial Republic - seemed opposed to their presence. They had even recently conducted an extensive assault against the colonization fleet that was tantamount to war. In an effort to resolve this and stop a full-scale war from erupting, Starfleet Command realized that with the experience of Ranil Isa as a Strategic Operations Officer, combined with Jaelyne Isa’s diplomatic experience, they had the opportunity to attack the problem from both sides. With the transfer of his First Officer, Commander Serala, Captain Mei’konda Delano of the USS Chin'toka had an excellent candidate to replace her that would also help meet the Federation’s needs in the region, and so Commander Isa received a transfer order to her new duty post as First Officer of the USS Chin'toka.

  • Habits: Tucks hair behind her ear absentmindedly, especially when stressed
  • Mannerisms: Cups her chin and taps her index finger on her lips while thinking; tends to hear all sides before making decisions;
  • Religion/Spiritual Devotion: While it may not be considered a true religion, like most joined Trill and Symbionts, Jaelyne Isa has a basic belief that one should care for their own body and health as well as that of the people around them. That to strive to better oneself is the best way to be true to oneself.
  • Hobbies and Pastimes: Running; Ballroom Dancing; Hiking/Camping; Studying Alien Cultures, especially interested in Rodulan culture and society

Previous Hosts

  • Nadune Isa
    • Gender/Species: Male Trill
    • Length as Host: 26 years
    • Age at Death: 50
    • Occupation: Politician
    • COD: Assassination
    • History: Nadune was the first of the Isa hosts, and was an eminent politician in his day. Nadune’s work helped to establish several laws on Trill, and was considered something of an extreme liberal. Some of Nadune’s political views, however, were not well received and at the age of 50 he was assassinated in order to prevent him from pushing his radical agenda.
  • Jybi Isa
    • Gender/Species: Male Trill
    • Length as Host: 57 years
    • Age at Death: 83
    • Occupation: Doctor
    • COD: Old Age
    • History: Doctor Jybi Isa was a renowned physician on his homeworld of Trill and his expertise, in conjunction with the work of the Guardians, was instrumental in developing new and better health care techniques for joined Trill and their symbionts. Jybi died at the age of 83, and the Isa host was passed on to Kovurn.
  • Kovurn Isa
    • Gender/Species: Male Trill
    • Length as Host: 58 years
    • Age at Death: 85
    • Occupation: Warp Field Theorist
    • COD: Old Age
    • History: Kovurn Isa was the third of the Isa hosts and specialized in warp field theory, helping to advance research in that area. Though many of his theories would not receive official recognition, they were instrumental in formulating new and better understanding in the creation and use of warp fields. Kovurn died after having lived a full and happy life, and the Isa symbiont was passed on to its next host, Ranil.
  • Ranil Isa
    • Gender/Species: Male Trill
    • Length as Host: 17 years
    • Age at Death: 43
    • Occupation: Strategic Operations Officer
    • COD: Shuttle Accident
    • History: Ranil Isa was born in 2354 and was considered an ideal candidate for joining. He was placed into the Initiate program and at the age of 26 was joined with the Isa symbiont following the death of Kovurn. Ranil had joined Starfleet just prior to this event and in the wake of the Dominion War, decided that he would focus on the areas of tactics and strategy in the event that another such war should come upon the Federation again. In 2387, when the Hobus supernova occurred, Ranil helped to monitor the events in the shattered Romulan Empire and was assigned to help monitor the Klingon invasion into the Romulan Star Empire. In 2397, while assigned to the USS Karbel-C, Ranil was assigned to a team that was to participate in diplomatic talks meant to diffuse tensions between two warring factions. The shuttle never arrived, having crash landed on an L-class planet, where Ranil would succumb to his wounds and the Isa symbiont was transplanted into its next host, Jaelyne.
