Lance Corporal Link Jenson is currently serving as a Marine Spotter aboard the USS Octavia E Butler. He has a positive disposition and often has long, drawn-out trains of thought that leave others wondering if he was: a) okay, or b) dropped on his head as a child. Jenson was born on Betazed to a human father and a Betazoid mother. His empathic abilities manifest as what he calls a "vibe check." A quirk of his birth is that, rather than sensing emotions and processing them mentally, he instead sees an aura around people, with different colors representing various emotional states and intensities.

Jenson and O'Reilly have served together since Jenson was assigned to the OEB, and they often play poker together. Despite Jenson's empathic ability, he never wins.

Empathic Ability

Jenson possesses a unique form of empathic ability. Unlike typical Betazoids, who sense emotions mentally, Jenson perceives these emotions as auras surrounding individuals. This ability places him on a similar level to other half-Betazoid/humans, such as Deanna Troi. The key difference for Jenson is that he does not sense emotions; instead, he visually perceives them as auras.

To manage this ability, Jenson wears special gloves that help dull the input from others, particularly in crowded spaces. For Jenson, different colors in these auras represent various emotional states and intensities. He refers to this ability as performing a "vibe check."

Jenson has observed various colors in people's auras, each representing different emotional states. For example:

  • Gold: Happiness
  • Red: Anger (intensity increases as the red becomes brighter)
  • Blue: Calm and serenity
  • Gray: Fear
  • Purple: Sadness
  • White: Honesty or truthfulness
  • Yellow: Nervousness or anxiety

Link has also noted that auras can display multiple colors simultaneously, indicating complex emotional states. For example:

  • Gold-gray: A mix of happiness and sadness
  • Dark gray with flickering purple: Fear mixed with sadness
  • Fiery red with flecks of dark purple: Urgency or aggression combined with deceit or hidden motives

Jenson developed this ability suddenly and unexpectedly at age 12, when he was struck by sensory overload and extreme disorientation. Both he and his family spent months trying—and failing—to help Jenson manage this ability before he was given suppression techniques, medication, and eventually, at age 14, the gloves that would become his key to a normal life.

Career History

Jenson joined the Marine Corps in 2400 and was soon posted to 4/72 Company aboard the USS Octavia E Butler. There, he specialized as a spotter and developed a close friendship with Thomas O'Reilly, whom Jenson would spot for.

In 2401, Jenson and O'Reilly were sent back to the year 2024 and landed at a Comic-Con, a convention for science fiction and fantasy fans. They worked alongside Lt. JG Jer-Legrand to stop Loom cultists from bombing the convention, thereby preserving the timeline. They later returned using a shattered time crystal fragment.

In 2402, Jenson and O'Reilly were providing cover support for Firebase Aeigs when their position was attacked by orbital bombardment. O'Reilly was seriously injured, and afterward, Jenson found his telepathic abilities had dulled to such a degree that he no longer needed his gloves. While awaiting news of O'Reilly’s condition, Jenson fell into a depression.

Out of Character Note

Jenson's abilities were originally intended for my main character, Lhandon Nilsen. However, as I wrote various pieces (many of which will never see the light of day), I found the "vibe check" concept didn’t fit Nilsen. In the summer of 2024, while collaborating with the writer behind Thomas O'Reilly—whose main character is Toxin Arlill (no one is surprised we worked together on this)—I revived the rejected idea, and Link was born.
