Background

Born on 12, September 2376 on Trill in the baby boom following the Dominion War. His parents used their wartime experience to gain command of an independent freighter. As such, most of Leran’s life was spent on a freighter transferring cargo between planets and stations. On rare occasions, Leran would be able to disembark while docked at a station not within the Federation. The most exotic locations were within the Lyran Star Empire and the Tholian Assembly.

Leran during his early childhood enjoyed playing with toy starships, and as he grew older enjoyed building models of ships ranging from sailing ships to starships. In 2389, his parents took notice of this hobby and added basic maintenance tutoring to his schooling. Leran after a year, would help with ship repairs for the freighter.

By 2392, at age 16, Leran became interested in becoming a host for a symbiont. While docked at Starbase 47, an open symposium on joined Trill was held for Starfleet medical officers. Leran understood little of the advanced medical topics, but became enthralled by a Trill who discussed her experiences with her Symbiont.

At age 18, Leran applied to the Symbiosis Commission for consideration for a symbiont. He was turned down because of his limited experiences and poor future prospects. He simply doesn’t have anything to offer to the symbiont or future hosts. As such, Leran experiences a crushing disappointment.

From 2394 – 2396, he worked as assistant chief engineer on his parents’ freighter, but by 2397,age 22, he decides to join Starfleet against his parents’ wishes, leading to an estrangement between him and his brother.

Leran Perax tends to avoid conflict. His parent’s served in the Dominion War as part of a conscription. They afterward became pacifists. Leran is not a pacifist, but rarely escalates a confrontation.

Perax is reserved with strangers, but becomes more friendly with acquaintances. This is due to the close knit group on his parents’ freighter, which has left him little opportunity make or keep friends outside the small crew.

He has the quirk of trying to use expressions and axioms that he has heard, but not memorised, in conversation and failing. (e.g.: “like a chester cat” instead of “like a Cheshire Cat”, or “once in a new moon” instead of “once in a blue moon”). Usually he is close, but every so often he completely mangles the expression.
