Devra Kay is currently serving as a Science Officer aboard the USS Khitomer. As a type-A academic with a focus on xenology and xenoarchaeology, Devra joined Starfleet to fulfill her passion and explore the stars. She is organized, diligent, and more than a little confident. She has set numerous goals for herself - from as large as making a major archaeological discovery before she is 30 or to as simple as becoming qualified to command a ship for the night watch - and holds herself to a standard that some may say is unwise.

Biography

Devra Kay was born on stardate 237505.05 to Omi Lanarth and Romin Lanarth. Both of her parents were unjoined Trill archeologists who were employed by the Vulcan Science Academy. As such, Devra lived the itinerant life of her parents, journeying from system to system, dig site to dig site. Her fascination with other cultures and lost civilizations grew as she did throughout her childhood.

When Devra was 15, her parents had her apply for joining the Trill Symbiosis Commission and became the first Lanarth accepted for the honour. At the age of 22, Devra journeyed to Trill to be joined with the Kay Symbiont - whose former host, a farmer and recluse named Avin Kay, had recently died. The joining deeply affected Devra - with the strong personality of Kay's previous lives and their collective memories and trauma - turning an excitable young girl into a serious, academic woman with a desire to run from Trill ... as far from Trill as possible.

Thus, Devra applied to join Starfleet academy, passing the entrance exams with flying colours. Shortly after this, Devra's father disappeared while on a survey mission of Rigel XII, prompting her mother to retire from archeological field work and relocate permanently to Vulcan. A studious cadet, Devra's passion for xenology and archeology placed her firmly in the science stream. Due to what some may consider an unfair advantage due to Kay's memories and expertise, Devra was not a popular student at the academy, something she rather resented despite her educational success.  

Having graduated Starfleet Academy, Devra was assigned as a science officer on the USS Khitomer.

Personality

Devra Lanarth was a flippant, unserious girl who was transformed at the age of 22 into the studious, serious Devra Kay. The joining with the Kay symbiont - a singularly powerful personality with a darkened past - changed Devra forever. While she retained her fascination with archeology and other cultures, an inheritance from her parents, the symbionts experience, ambition, and desire to escape Trill made her feel much older than a young woman. She is obsessively organized and disciplined and keenly focused on her work. She has a great understanding of other cultures, frequently being accused by her cadet colleagues of moral relativism. She is distrustful of Doctors, citing experiences in her past lives.

Hobbies

Devra has a wide variety of interests, largely related to her work. She is a compulsive collector of rare art and artefacts from cultures across the galaxy and one will frequently find variety of music coming from her quarters, ranging from Klingon opera to Bajoran choir songs to the sounds of Earth's classical period. Likewise, she is fascinated by cooking and food and frequently experiments with delicacies from around the Galaxy. She is an avid fan of the holodeck - primarily period pieces - as well as physical activities including kendo, squash and tennis.

Avin Kay

A humble, embittered farmer who lived a quiet life on Trill Prime. Was joined with the Kay Symbiont as an emergency measure following the unexpected death of Jizayl Kay. From Avin, Devra gets her serious nature and reserved countenance.

Jizayl Kay

A brilliant Doctor, Jizayl was renowned on Trill for her research into the symbiosis process and the differences between joined and unjoined Trill. Alongside hundreds of other researchers, she was killed when her laboratory vessel lost power in orbit over Trill and crashed into the planet's surface. From Jizayl, Devra gets her scientific mind and confidence.

Supraya Kay

A restaurateur, Supraya spent most of her life on Trill operating a chain of successful and rather high end establishments that catered to the well to do. From Supraya, Devra gets her love of cooking and the finer things.

Oran Kay

A legal scholar, Oran is the longest lived of all the Kay hosts. He served in the Trill Government for a significant period of time as a legal functionary and played a minor role during Trill's first contact with the Federation. From Oran, Devra gets her organizational skills and ruthless analytical dispassion.
