Kirkington Algernon-Greene Bean IV was born in Belgravia, London, Earth, on Stardate 237404.15 (15 April 2374). His parents are Kirkington Algernon Bean III (b. 2332) and Gwathmey Perdita Bean (née Greene, b. 2333). He has an older sister, Fenella Flora Bean-Ó Bríain (b. 2371), and a younger brother, Cornelius Tarquin Bean (b. 2376).

Kirky was educated at a grammar school before attending the University of Alpha Centauri, where he studied flight dynamics. After graduating from university in 2396, he enlisted in Starfleet. He entered service at the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class due to his university qualification, and was posted to Deep Space 224. In July 2397, he was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class and transferred to the USS Resolution.
