Bran Karaz was born on Alpha Centauri IV on Stardate 236812.26 to unjoined parents, his mother Brynna was a comms specialist in the entourage of a Trill ambassador, his father Kaihl was a Starfleet pediatrician. The relationship ended when his father was deployed to a hospital ship to support the Federation's war against the Dominion. Bran continued to live with his mother, where his diplomatic upbringing revealed a talent for language. Moving to Earth in his early Teens where he bought into Federation Ideals hard, dreaming of one day attending Starfleet Academy. He attended an academy prep school with the children of many of the Federation's elite and was talented but quite reserved; Bran graduated with good but not impressive grades. Advised to delay his application, he received an invitation from his father on Trill, who had since retired from Starfleet and joined The Guardians. Believing his son to be an excellent candidate for The Joining with a particular rambunctious young Symbiont, Bran arrived to find himself scheduled for testing with only a few months to prepare. Never desirous of The Joining, Bran nevertheless crammed and attended his tests, almost out of curiosity. Though once again, he struggled with the Sciences, his language fluency, ambitious curiosity, and psychological compatibility seemed to suitably impress the Commission.

The Symbiont, Maro, had never left the Caves of Mak'ala. In fact, Maro was younger than his first host and could barely control his excitement to see the Galaxy and all of its diverse people and cultures. The Joining was indeed a good idea for both parties and Bran Maro knew that nothing would stop him from his destiny going where no one had gone before. Returning to San Francisco to apply only felt right and with the additional drive, spacial intelligence, and confidence, he passed the entry exam with flying colors. He studied Xenology until at the end of his first year he was badly smitten with a Vulcan classmate named T'Pera and he started studying psychology to impress her. The relationship ended as quickly as it began, reaffirming the Symbiosis Commission's ascetic idealism. Nevertheless, Maro's fascination with the mind and love of culture propelled him towards a degree in Counseling. Ultimately he dual majored in Counseling and Science, graduating with reasonably high marks. His ultimate dream was to make first contact, meeting and documenting alien cultures never dreamed of with Maro's eternally burning curiosity spurring him on.
