Scania (known as "Nia") grew up in the war-torn, tribal world of [[Byzatium]]. Learning to shoot almost before she could walk, Nia spent her formative years learning the trade of what it took to survive. Her skills became utilised as an adult by the Dorfmen government on Byzatium, and she became a covert operative working alongside the Federation. During one mission she was even being disguised as a Bajoran for several months. After the main Dorfmen government were toppled during the [[Mutos War]], Nia escaped and met up with her roguish half-brother [[Handley-Page, Leo|Graven Beaufytor]] for some madcap adventures across the galaxy. However, after a while, their creditors began to close the noose, so both opted to rejoin Star Fleet to put their skills to better use. Nia was posted as a marine on the {{USS|Vigilant}}. She became a key member of the crew, and showed her bravery and enthusiasm in mission after mission, not
always to her own benefit and safety.<br><br>
 
Nia has also started a relationship with the Brikar Security Chief, {{n|Eerie}}. Nia took a sabbatical when the Vigilant's marine department was disbanded and for a short while focused on her domestic duties in Eerie's quarters. During this time she kept in contact with both the Dorfmen Byzallian government-in exile. It wasn't long before her experience as a liaison between different planets was recognised by Starfleet when looking for someone who was available to work as a diplomatic attache in the Menthar Corridor. Nia decided to accept the posting, although leaving Eerie was painful for her. She promised to visit him as often as she could and hoped one day they could serve together again. She was assigned to the {{USS|Garuda}} and rose to First Officer, and then Ambassador during 2391.
