Nali was born on Delta IV, a cosmopolitan world comprised primarily of island nations. The Deltan people, having a polygamous mating culture, often sustain large families, both immediate and extended. Nali had such a family and divided her time between the planet and colonies of it’s two moons, Seyann and Cinera. She spent a great deal of that time around the offworld visitors who were restricted to those sequestered moons and cultivated an affinity for the various species that she encountered. As she came of age her overwhelming Deltan pheromones emerged and imperilled those foreign visitors. She was faced with a choice to begin pheromone treatments or return to the planet, discontinuing close quarter fraternization with alien species. She was reluctant to curtail her species’ natural sexuality and was in fact eager to embrace it so she decided to suspend her alien fellowships and withdrew to the planet.

Nali was sharp of mind with a keen intellect and persistent drive to help others so it did not surprise anyone when she committed to studying medicine at the Deltan Medical Foundation. She met her two comates (husbands) while obtaining her education and gave birth to three children during that time. She graduated from the Deltan Medical Foundation at the age of twenty-four and had been practicing medicine for less than a year when she announced her intention of joining Starfleet.

Her first application to Starfleet Academy was denied because her psych evaluation indicated a reluctance to absolute adherence to the required Oath of Celibacy. Nali underwent additional sensitivity training and enrolled in a six week Preparatory Program and upon completion applied a second time and was accepted to the Academy. She attended four years of Academy at the Betazed satellite location partially because it was believed the psionic nature of Betazoids would ease the transition to being around other species full time. Following graduation she transferred to Starfleet Medical Academy in San Francisco, Earth.
