Aldean

The Aldeans were a civilization native to the Alpha Quadrant. Their homeworld of Aldea was considered only a legend for thousands of years.

The society was self-contained and self-sustaining with incredible technical sophistication providing daily needs. Similar to cultural myths of Neinman on Xerxes VII or the Earth story of Atlantis, Aldea was said to have shed its past of violence and cultural conflict and evolved to a pure state, devoting themselves to culture and art. The Aldean culture developed by emphasizing the fundamental principle that for "everything taken, something must be returned." It was this principle that allowed their civilization to ascend to incredible heights in technology and art.

Having reached enlightenment, the Aldean society retreated from the rest of the galaxy. To facilitate this, their progenitors built an enormous and advanced planet-wide defense system. The system, run by the computer called the Custodian, maintained an immense cloaking device and defense shield, in addition to a repulsor beam powerful enough to push starships several hundred light years away.

However, the long-term effects of the planet's defenses were extremely damaging. Millennia after the Aldeans retreated behind their cloak, cumulative wide-spread environmental damage, including depletion of their ozone layer, began to take their toll. The Aldeans suffered from long-term chromosomal damage from radiation poisoning due to exposure to their sun's ultraviolet rays. By 2364, the entire population of Aldea was sterile and depleted. No child had been born on Aldea for more than thirty years, and most of native wildlife on the planet, including all the fish in their oceans, had long ago become extinct.

Desperate to preserve their society, the Aldeans, led by Radue contacted the USS Enterprise-D for help in repopulating their planet. Unable to reproduce themselves, the Aldeans offered to exchange their vast knowledge for a select few of the Enterprise's children. The Aldeans were physiologically very similar to Humans, which presumably was a deciding factor when they contacted the Enterprise. The Enterprise turned down the offer, leading the Aldeans to kidnap the children, creating a stand-off that was eventually resolved when the Enterprise proved that the very thing which had protected Aldea, its cloak, was responsible for their condition.

The Aldeans returned the children and set about re-learning their own technology and adjusting to a new galaxy where they were no longer just a legend.

Aldean society was structured into units, or social groups, which specialized in a particular art or pursuit such as medicine or science. Within each group students were fully devoted to their discipline. The Aldeans had perfected their system of education and study to the point where the natural abilities of the individual blossomed very quickly, sometimes within hours or days of the student's first exposure to a medium. Armus

A unique but destructive life-form resembling a living oil slick but able to alter form into a variety of shapes, including a humanoid-like form and a thin shielding large enough to envelop a Galaxy-class starship's shuttlecraft. Armus was created as a byproduct of the Vagran's ridding themselves of their undesirable emotions, and, as the literal skin of their evil, Armus can create formidable energy fields which affect passing vessels, or nearby people. Armus is most known for brutally killing Lieutenant Tasha Yar on stardate 41601.3.

MA Armus was a malevolent entity created by an unknown race.

Armus was born as a by-product of a procedure in which a race of "titans" brought out from within themselves all evil and negative attributes, that had bound them to destructiveness. The unwanted substance spread and coalesced into a dank and vile second skin. The race rejected this "skin of evil" and abandoned it on the barren planet Vagra II in the Zed Lapis sector.

Armus manifested as a black viscous liquid that could also assume a vaguely humanoid shape. Tricorder scans could not register the substance Armus was composed of. Armus was also capable of enveloping humanoids and incorporating them into the liquid, where they would remain conscious while in liquid form. Armus was impervious to phaser fire, and Data theorized it was, in fact, feeding off of the phaser energy. Captain Picard also assumed Armus was immortal.

After the initial abandonement, Armus was left in a state of undirected rage. However when the rage was focused, Armus was capable of generating around itself an intense undefined force field. With this energy field it was capable of blocking sensor scans, communications, and transporters. It was also capable of using psychokinesis and teleportation on at least humanoid-size organisms within the field. Armus was also capable of inflicting energy discharges that caused synaptic damage to humanoids, killing them. Presumably this field was also responsible for causing the nearby Shuttlecraft 13 to experience a massive systems breakdown and crashland on the planet in 2364.

Armus waited for someone to arrive for the rescue of the two shuttlecraft passengers in order to sadistically torture them. After killing Tasha Yar, Armus expected to feel amusement, and that the USS Enterprise-D crew would abandon the rescue effort. Even after they didn't, Armus realized torturing them would never be amusement enough. It wanted passage away from Vagra II to find the beings that initially abandoned it there. Eventually, Picard was able to distract Armus long enough for the energy field to weaken enough to allow beaming the shuttle occupants and himself off the surface. The shuttle wreckage was destroyed with a photon torpedo to prevent any possibility of Armus leaving the planet, and Vagra II was declared off-limits. (TNG: "Skin of Evil")

Australopithecine

An australopithecine was a primitive humanoid, closely related to Humans, that lived on Earth between three and five million years ago. Commander William T. Riker was mutated into an australopithecine after contracting Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome in 2370. (TNG: "Genesis")
