Background

Daughter of diplomat Bram Stapledon and computer scientist Lisa Shen, Kimberly (most often called "Kim") grew up in a small town called Oar’s Rest on New Cyprus. She spent much of her time reading books on science, psychology, literature, and holographic art.

Her father noted her tendency to explore topics in depth, often posing questions that got at deeper issues.

Kim's interest in Starfleet began during her early teenage years, when she'd become skilled enough in holonovel creation that she could build the adventure scenarios she'd always imagined in her mind. Her mother described her precotious abilities with holography as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, she was able to realize nearly any imaginable scenario. On the other, this allowed her to remain in the comfort of a world of her own creation without needing to face the viscicitudes of life.

During her time in high school Kim came to realize that she was relying too much on fantasy. Still craving a life of adventure, however, she set her eyes on Starfleet. The organization held the promise of near infinite exploration and adventure.

During an academy admittance interview her mother observed that she had built several immersive pet projects in the form of open world halo novels. She admitted this perhaps to advise the interviewing officer of Kimberly’s introverted tendencies.

She was encouraged to join Starfleet and, on graduating from high school, put in an application for the academy’s officer training program.

Her time at the academy was uneventful, her studies punctuated by occasional undergraduate antics.

Kimberly (“Kim”) now looks forward to working as a Starfleet engineer, where she will be able to combine her talents with her desire to explore.

New Cyprus

Cats

During her upbringing on New Cyprus Kim spent a good amount of time around the ring cats, an evolutionary branch of slightly more intelligent cats that descended from a small population of polydactyl cats brought to the planet during initial colonization.

Fantasy Worlds

Kim has created a few fantasy worlds in the form of holoprograms.

Her running program includes a world she created during her youth, set in a city called Shimitsai, in which she was a member of "The Secret Squadron", a crime fighting organization.
