Hoyt was born in a common household in Ferenginar, his parents were not of power or huge amounts of money, so his life was fairly normal in terms of upbringing, being raised by his mother and disciplined by his father, who expected him to become someone as recognized as his brother, who by the age of twenty had a successful business.

When Hoyt was around fifteen, he began having interest in the life of a Starfleet officer, he had heard of a few Ferengi officers who had made a life on ships and stations, but he had also heard of the way they are commonly seen in the Ferengi culture, not very common.

He himself was indulged in compliments regarding his lobes, a typical thing to do when a Ferengi seems to be good in business, which, by all accounts, Hoyt was, but there was something in the life of an officer that seemed interesting to him, it was still a place where the competition was little and the possibilities of profit were vast, at least in his opinion.

This, however, was only his opinion, as his father didn't like the idea of losing one of his sons to this military life with very small opportunities. This ended up being a discussion that ended up with a Ferengi who gave up his dreams to start his life as a trader.

Fortunately, this was a short life, as soon as he managed to get a small chip to work with, he surrendered his commerce life and joined Starfleet, studying hard to become a recognized officer one day, focusing his studies in things far apart from his upbringing, taking his major in Intelligence and his minor in Tactical training.

Still, his previous life and teachings are things that he can't get rid of, so from time to time someone can see him reciting the Rules of Acquisition under his breath, old customs die hard and this was something ingrained in his DNA.
