The Kriosian are an intelligent humanoid species that split from the Valtese ages ago. The resulting conflict lasted for generations.

History

The vast Kriosian empire was once ruled by two brothers, named Krios and Valt. They would become divided over the love for a woman, an empathic metamorph, known as Garuth. They both loved Garuth with such passion that the Kriosian empire fell. Krios eventually kidnapped Garuth from their homeworld and took her to the planet that became his namesake. This action started a centuries long war between the two worlds.

By the 22nd century, the Kriosians were under the rule of the Kriosian Sovereign Dynasty, a family known on hundreds of worlds. The royal guardsmen of the Dynasty were known as the Sovereign Guard. Their leader was known as the First Monarch.

In September 2152, the future First Monarch Kaitaama was returning from a diplomatic mission when the Retellians attacked her transport. They killed her guards, placed her in stasis, and attempted to hold her for ransom. En route to their destination, the stasis pod where she was held aboard the kidnappers' ship began to malfunction.

They were assisted by Enterprise, which later discovered the truth behind the kidnapping when their own chief engineer, Charles Tucker III was himself kidnapped. Both Tucker and Kaitaama were later rescued, and the First Monarch was transported back to her homeworld. Kaitaama later ascended to the throne around May 16, 2153.

Sometime between the mid-22nd and mid-24th century, the Klingons established a colony on Krios and subjugated the Kriosians under their rule.

In 2367, the Kriosians began fighting for independence from the Klingon Empire. During the revolt, the rebels hid in the Ikalian asteroid belt, where they used the actinides in the asteroids to hide from sensor scans. The rebels later attacked a Ferengi freighter and a Cardassian freighter, in the belt.

For the most part, the Klingons tolerated the rebellion, until Vagh, the Klingon governor of Krios, charged the Federation with supplying the rebels with phaser rifles. Upon further investigation by Starfleet, it was discovered that the suppliers were, in fact, the Romulans, who were planting the evidence in attempt to drive a wedge between the Klingons and the Federation, and to jeopardize the Treaty of Alliance.

The following year, Krios and Valt Minor finally agreed to the Ceremony of Reconciliation, to finally bring an end to their centuries long war. The Ceremony was held aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D at a point mid-way between the two systems.

Kamala, an empathic metamorph, the first female metamorph born on Krios since the mid-23rd century, was bred for mating to Chancellor Alrik, the leader of Valt Minor. Leaders of both worlds, in the hopes of restoring peace, prearranged this event at the time of her birth. Kept in stasis during the journey, Kamala was the key to peace between the two worlds.

The Ferengi became involved when they learned of the treaty, attempting in their own right, to acquire Kamala. They approached Briam, feigning the wish to have exclusive rights to transport all Kriosian products to the Valt system. Eventually their involvement lead to the premature waking of Kamala, and a near fatal accident with Kriosian ambassador Briam. Following the accident, Jean-Luc Picard was chosen to negotiate in his place in attempt to represent Kriosian interests of peace.

Despite receiving the gift of Kamala, Alrik was more concerned about the remaining provisions in the treaty, including unacceptable aspects of proposed trade agreements, the review of uncommitted territories, and the schedule for exchange of technology.

Ultimately the negotiations and preceding Ceremony were successful. The wedding, held in a holodeck recreation of the Temple of Akadar, went as planned, as Krios and Valt Minor took their first steps towards peace.

Government

Kriosians were once ruled by the First Monarch, head of the royal family that has ruled them since the beginning of the civil war that destroyed the Kriosian Empire. This individual had absolute authority over every member of their people.

The Sovereign Dynasty came to an end when the Klingons arrived two hundred years later. The class structure on Krios was useful for the Klingons in their rule of the planet and so the separation between nobility and commoners were kept, but after the planet regained its independence, a pseudo-democratic government among the nobility and privileged was established.

While there is no longer a First Monarch with absolute power, remnants of the Kriosian monarchy remain in Kriosian society, chief among them the royal court and Sovereign Guard. While the royal court no longer manages the day-to-day affairs of the planet, they are still tasked with the responsibility they’d performed for centuries long before Kriosians had achieved spaceflight: the development and care of empathic metamorphs.

Physically, Kriosians are almost identical to their ancestors, the Valtese, possessing a smattering of spots along the side of their face. However, Kriosians tend to be both taller and slimmer than their Valtese cousins and seem to be more sentimental as a culture as well.

The Kriosian spot pattern is somewhat similar to that of the Trill host, but there are key differences:

• Unlike Trill spots that run from the front of the head and then down the front of the chest and along the lateral sides of the legs down to the feet, the Kriosian spot pattern starts from the front of the head but then leads to the back, coming to a point about halfway down the spine.
• Kriosians spots tend to be more block-like compared to the interlocking shapes seen with the Trill.
• Kriosian spots are typically more subtle in their contrast to the overall skin tone compared to Trill spots.
• There is variation within the species. Some Kriosians have a small number of large spots, while others have more numerous but smaller spots.

Physiology

As with many humanoid species, while there are numerous similarities between them and others, there are also numerous ways in which they differ. The Kriosians are no exception.

Kriosians are also known for their somewhat randomly born empathic metamorphs. While male metamorphs are somewhat common, female metamorphs only appear once every seven generations and are highly sought after as mates.

The species Kriosians are most similar to is their Valtese cousins. The only big difference is the complete absence of any metamorphs with in the Valtese population. Both species live approximately 250 years on average.

Psychology

They seem to be a fairly relaxed people and public displays of emotion are common, frequent and considered a normal part of everyday life. Other than that they are like most other intelligent humanoid species with complex psyches and their fair share of attendant neurosis and mental illnesses.

Religion

Every adult member of the species is expected to visit the ancient Temple of Akadar at least once in their life time. This visit is usually a week long event with the individual taking time to relax, meditate and commune with the divine spirit of Akadar.

Mythology

They have a number of folk tales about Akadar and his creation of their people. Added to this is the modern set of tales about the royal brothers Valt and Krios. And the circumstances that resulted in civil war.

Society

The Kriosians maintain a structured class system, divided between the nobility and the commoners.

Discrimination based on gender, however, is not tolerated, and female Kriosians enjoy powerful positions in government and society, including the First Minister of the Kriosian Parliament. Another powerful female Kriosian is Sana, the Headmaster for the Royal Kriosian School for Metamorphs.

Children identified as empathic metamorphs are commonly taken from their parents by the age of four and placed in a royal village where they are prepared by their tutors and servants. These attendants would constantly educate the metamorphs in literature, history, art and sex.

When a family has produced a metamorph and is identified, it is considered an occasion of great celebration, both for the metamorph and the family, whose caste is elevated in acknowledgement for what they’ve brought to Kriosian society.

Some Kriosians practice polygamy. Metamorphs commonly were bonded to those in the upper echelons of society. Many politicians for instance have a metamorph as one of their spouses. It is not uncommon for those married to a metamorph to still find other partners to wed. For instance, the First Minister of the Kriosian Parliament had two non-metamorph husbands in addition to her male metamorph husband, Jatann.

Culture

Kriosian culture during the 22nd century did not allow the First Monarch to socialize with the opposite sex. If anyone attempted to "make a pass" at the Monarch, the Sovereign Guard would cut off one of their hands.

The males tend to wear robes that reach down to their feet and includes gloves that cover their entire arms and hands. The only exposed section of their bodies is their head and even that is usually covered by a small round hat.

Customs

The oldest custom that they have in common with their Kriosian cousins is that of arranged marriages. This is probably their oldest tradition that has lasted, with very few changes since the very early beginning of their civilization.

Technology

They are not as advanced as the Federation. Thanks to the numerous trade pacts and co-operative endeavors between them and the other species within the Piria Sector they are able to stay competitive and continue to advance, although it is at a slower rate than the Federation.

Economy

They are fairly self sufficient but do have a number of long term trade treaties with the other species within the Piria Sector. This pact includes a co-operative military venture to protect all civilian traffic with in the sector. While they are considered the 2nd strongest economic power in the sector they provide the largest part of the sectors joint security force.

Military

Since the formalization of the Ceremony of Reconciliation, which ended a centuries long war between them and their Valtese cousins they have reduced the size of their military. This was a mutual agreement between the 2 governments which resulted in not only a slow gradual decrease in their military forces but also the slow gradual development of a joint military task force to defend them all.

Now they have a small military force that mainly police’s their system and in conjuncture with the other species within the Piria Sector, the sector as well. This is to ensure the safety of all cargo and transport ships operating with in this area. In fact they supply the largest single contingent of men and ships for this joint security force.

Added to this is a strong planetary police force, one that has been trained and equipped in such a way as to be able to augment the military if and when needed. This would allow them to more than double their contribution to the joint security force.

The Piria Sector Joint Security Force (PSJSF) has combined the equivalent of almost 100 ships, with just over half of these being small frigate class vessels. The Kriosians have supplied 7 large cruisers to the joint security force.

Sakrysta was a female Kriosian Starfleet engineer who was transferred to the USS Enterprise-E in 2379.

Jovun Skernak was a male Kriosan Starfleet engineer assigned to the USS da Vinci who was killed in 2376.

Aytar Gwyn was a female half Kriosian conn officer assigned to the USS Voyager in 2381.

Vennoss was a female Kriosian who served aboard the USS Titan as a science officer.
