At 14 he became interested in applying to be a joined Trill and at 16 his parents allowed him to apply. However, his application was unsuccessful. He finished his studies and decided to apply to Starfleet Academy at 18 however his mother encouraged him to apply to be a joined Trill one more time. On his second attempt he was accepted to the program and spent a year at the symbiosis commission being prepared for joining.
