The number and types of medical conditions have increased almost exponentially since the 20th century. This database contains notes on some of the more interesting conditions that a 24th century Starfleet medic might encounter.

Aging Sickness

Afflictions encountered whose chief symptoms include the rapid aging of human tissue and body systems. One, discovered in 2267 at Gamma Hydra IV, was induced by radiation from a comet passing through the atmosphere and wiped out a science colony before its cure by Dr. Leonard McCoy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, using adrenalin rather than the more modern preferred drug, hyronalin. A variation of this affliction was created in 2365, caused by the otherwise harmless Thelusian flu virus after being mutated by an antibody from the aggressive immuno-system bred into the Darwin Station's "superchildren." It wiped out the U.S.S. Lantree's crew and threatened the station staff, including visiting Dr. Pulaski, before the crew was reintegrated via a modified transporter biofilter using a pre-infected sample of individual DNA.

Type of Disease: Tissue

Treatment: Adrenaline

Altairian Encephalitis

A retro-virus that incorporates its DNA directly into the cells of its host, lying dormant up to many years before becoming active and subjecting the host to a coma and delirium for days. This inactivity erases through synapse degradation all memory back to the point of infection. Apparently Klingons are immune to this infection.

Type of Disease: Cellular

Treatment: None Known

Anchilles Fever

Deadly disease capable of spreading rapidly in a planetary population and causing widespread and painful deaths in the millions.

Type of Disease: Fever

Treatment: None Known

Andronesian Encelphalitis

A highly contagious disease, yet safely treated in Sickbay thanks to a superior air filtration system. The threat of this disease caused the guardian of the Daled IV dauphin to request the destruction of the individual infected.

Type of Disease: Respiratory

Treatment: Filtration of Air in Patient's Environment

Aphasia Virus

A virus genetically engineered by Dekon Elig and spread by an "aphasia device". It causes dysfunction of the brain function concerned with communication. Those afflicted spoke and perceived all language as gibberish; if not cured, they would eventually have died.

Type of Disease: Psychological Damage

Treatment: Surgery

Arethian Flu

Viral disease.

Type of Disease: Viral

Treatment: Anti-histamine

Athelosclerosis

A pathological condition in some humanoid species characterized by the hardening of the arteries and accompanied by the deposit of fat in the inner arterial walls.

Type of Disease: Nervous System

Treatment: Vascular Regeneration Therapy

Ba'ltmasor Syndrome

A disease that afflicts Klingons, which requires regular treatments given by injection.

Type of Disease: Unknown (Klingons Only)

Treatment: Regular Injections

Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome

A syndrome where intron release causes a de-evolution within a patient's DNA. The virus is caused by the invasion of genetic codes by synthetic T-cells, and was named for Lieutenant (j.g.) Reginald Barclay of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D in 2370 as its progenitor.

Type of Disease: Genetic

Treatment: Retro-Viral Injection

Bendii Syndrome

A rare usually fatal disease that afflicts Vulcans over the age of 200, debilitating their emotional control; there is no known treatment. Early symptoms include sudden bursts of emotion, especially irrational anger, but the only way to prove a diagnosis is to grow a culture from tissue of the metathalamus â⿬⿿ a process which takes several days. The telepathic abilities of Vulcans are strong enough to cause the loss of control to be projected onto others.

Type of Disease: Nervous System (Vulcans Only)

Treatment: None Known

Blight, The

Disease unleashed on the Teplan civilization by the conquering Jem'Hadar. Sufferers showed blue welts and lesions once they contracted the disease, but they began to die once the welts turn red in a phase known as "the quickening." In 2372, Julian Bashir fashioned a cure which could not help the current generation of sufferers but would take effect with their newborn.

Type of Disease: Dermal

Treatment: Known only to Dr. Julian Bashir

Biomemetic Fluctuation

Medical reading in Founders that are indicative of dangerous instability of the morphogenic matrix.

Type of Disease: Morphogenic

Treatment: None Known

Biochemical condition that plagued the people of planet Scalos due to radiation poisoning of their water supply. Hyperacceleration of biological processes caused an individual so affected to experience one second as if it were an entire hour. Hypoglycemia

Low blood glucose. It is treatable with Norep, however more than 40 mg/dl creates motor coordination problems.

Iresine Syndrome

A very rare neurological disorder in humanoids characterized by a peculiar electropathic signature in the thalamus, and a severely decreased histamine count. Victims of the disorder, first identified in the 23rd century, would fall suddenly into a coma for approximately 72 hours. Diagnosis could be confused by the presence of any of 22 different substances that left electropathic residue resembling that of this disorder.

Irumodic Syndrome

Degenerative disorder that causes progressive deterioration of the synaptic pathways. The disease can cause senility and eventually death. Treatment of choice for the disorder was peridaxon, though this was simply palliative; no cure existed.

In 2372, when Odo was at Starfleet Medical for an examination, he was unknowingly given the virus, but it did not manifest itself until three years later. The main symptom is a decreasing ability to shapeshift, accompanied by pain and peeling skin; the progress is accelerated by frequent shapeshifting and in the final stage of the disease, the Changeling cannot revert back to liquid state at all and die in a solid form. The cure for the disease contains a nucleotide marking sequence consisting of adanine, asporadine, lytastolanine, and radanine.

Although Vulcans live strictly by the dictates of logic, their veneer of civilization is ripped away from them during Pon farr, every seven years of their adult life. The individual experiencing Pon farr will stop eating and sleeping if not allowed to return home to take a mate. During Pon farr, the brain is thrown into a neurochemical imbalance that can be fatal if the mating drive is not acted upon. The Vulcan telepathic mating bond draws mated couples irresistably together during Pon farr.

In the very early stages, the patient's eyelids are slightly displaced, facial muscles are weakened and respiration is irregular. Loss of motor skills occurs in 10-15 years; life expectancy is 20-25 years. In less than 5% of cases, the disease can accelerate without warning.

A virus affecting the empathic abilities of mature Betazoids. It causes brief, intense headaches, during which the patient unconsciously projects his or her emotions onto others nearby, provided those emotions already exist in those others subconsciously. It can be easily cured with a simple wide-spectrum antibiotic.
