! style="background:#ffffff;" |Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Mikk Toral) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.
Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.
