'''Battle with Alcoholism'''
'''Battle with Alcoholism'''

The pressure of being at the academy, combined with many years of guilt and self-loathing took a devastating toll on Regan's mental health. To cope with daily life he began neglecting his studies to go to campus parties and have a good time. He started drinking in his second year, and by the first semester of his third year it developed into a serious problem and he began drinking daily and in secret to the point where he depended on the alcohol to get him through the day. When he washed out of the Academy in 2391 he disappeared and not much is known about his time away from Earth. He was found nine months later on a distant planet, Lakata (A rough and dangerous planet on the bad side of Ferengi space), after a painstaking search by his family. Eventually, though extensive counselling and other medical treatments he has been clean and sober since 2392, and his family used a lot of their influence in Starfleet to get him a second chance at Starfleet Academy in 2393. It is revealed in his crew physical by Ensign Sivok on the USS Arrow that Starfleet Command placed a heavy caveat on his graduation, and he had to pass a mandatory substance test in order to retain his commission.

'''Klingon Culture'''
'''Klingon Culture'''

Regan is a self-confessed Klingon junkie, and adores everything Klingon, from pain sticks to opera (though gagh is an acquired taste!). He finds Klingon culture and society to be rich and fascinating and follows the Klingon Code of Honour. He drinks Raktajino, practices Mok'bara and has a Mek'leth blade in his quarters which he is very adept with. He plans one day to progress to Bat'leth training and enter tournaments competitively. Though he is still a novice, he speaks modest Klingon. He attributes his love of everything Klingon to his close friend, confidant and mentor, T'Wrath (son of Meltak), who as the eldest son and heir inducted his cousin Danny Wilde into the House of Meltak in the 2380's.
