Sedrin - Lord of the Flies
((OOC: Really looking forward to seeing where you take this one, Marari!))
::
Sedrin stared the older man down. He knew he was too easily led. He'd always been this way. He'd been the romantic, the gullible fool who always stopped Sedrin short of accomplishing anything.::
::
Now he believed that the Federation would simply stand by and allow them to exist. If the Federation was half as great as the Vaadwaur they would do no such thing. Life was nothing but a struggle for dominance and power. He could not and would not allow the Federation to dictate how they should live or what they could do with themselves.::
Marari:: Of course, brother. They already dictate those terms to us. Look around you! If we win the day today, what then? They have sent half a dozen or more ships against us- if we defeat them all, they will send a hundred! We cannot win against their numbers! There are trillions of Federation citizens- this is folly! We MUST cooperate!
::
He refused to concede, as the room flickered from the bursting lights outside. He felt the small feet of one of his flies on his face, reminding him of the good life he'd chosen, of what his brother was asking him to relinquish.::
Sedrin:: ::Screaming:: WE CAANNN'TT!!!!! ::He thrust his fist toward the window:: They are just another obstacle! They are in my way. Those vermin that infest this quadrant with their filth. Equality..... Peace.... Only the weak herd believes in these things! We must take control now and show these cockroaches their true nature!
Marari:: Brother, please- swallow your pride. You must come to see the truth in what I'm saying. This fight is over. We must... we must save as many as we can. Save our species. It's the only way. The ONLY way. Please... signal the Achilles. They have the power to end this. Just signal them and we can arrange for the station to change hands, then we can be off to our world! To our-
::
He felt more flies pattering about his forehead, more proboscises. He felt the gentle hands on his face.::
Safina:: I can't stop you.
Sedrin:: ::queitly muttering:: No one can stop me.
::
Another fly landed on him. Marari coughted. Several more flies buzzed around his head.::
::
Tenderly, the voice of Safina whispered again.::
Safina:: Have no fear.
Marari:: ... our new future.
::
The gentle whisper crossed his mind again, her face staring at him from across the table in that prison cell, innocence from an age as eternal as patience itself.::
Sedrin:: ::quietly:: Why do you always come?
::
He looked down at his wrist again, and saw the wound ooze green, maggots and flies seeping from it and crawling across his body.::
Safina:: It's hopeless. There's no one alive any longer that would understand your kind.
Sedrin:: It's not hopeless. It's never hopeless.
::
His lips began to quiver and his vision grew grainy. He could not move as the brilliant white light began to take him, pulling him away from this place. The light blinded him as he felt powerless to move, all life seeping from his body into a gray void, gone.::
((Viculesa Prison Colony, Somewhere in the Delta Quadrant))
::
He sits across from her patiently, the name Marari setting behind the clouds like Earth's moon - gray, helpless, horrified. The small woman stares back, eyes red. She's been in this cell for years now and he visits her every now and again to keep her company.::
Safina:: It's hopeless. There's no one alive any longer that would understand... my kind.
::
She freely exposes her slashed wrist, blood dripping from it and spattering on the table like so many drops of thick sweat onto rock. He can feel the resolve rising in him, advice freely given because it was too easy to come by in the first place.
Sedrin:: Get up! Do something!!
::
Her face is white, her lips blue.::
Safina:: I can't...
::
The girl collapses and he kneels beside her as the blood oozes from her wrists, her pupils slowly expanding around the widening darkness. Sedrin hovers over the surface of the void, impotent and helpless to change its form as the prison lights darken and the walls close up.::

Commentary
The roles of Sedrin and Safina are reversed, Sedrin this time playing a messianic figure who ultimately fails in this nightmare world created for him by Breeman's hacked flies. The final paragraph, a paraphrase of the spirit of God hovering over the void of creation, twists that account to show a figure who cannot even act to bring form to something simple and basic.
