====Reproduction====
===Reproduction===
Kubarey females have the ability to hold an embryo in suspension within their bodies. This happens after fertilisation, when a specific amino acid essential for foetal development is missing from the mother's diet. The modern diet means that this rarely occurs naturally, but is sometimes deliberately triggered by woman separated from their partners, or who have specific obligations to complete (such as an expedition or tour of duty away from home).

Almost all Kubarey have a first name, at least one middle name and a family name. Their first name is entirely the selection of the child's family; it can be a virtue they hope their child will embody, the name of a favoured close relative or friend, or simply a name found pleasing.

The middle names are chosen by priests at the child's naming ceremony, usually conducted within the first year of birth. The names can include honoured ancestors, lesser deities, and notable historical figures. The belief is that the spirits of these individuals will watch over and guide the child through life.

Kubarey of both genders favour robes. The styling of the robes varies over time due to the vagaries of fashion, and an individual's Prakarna often plays into their clothing choices. For example, Vala often favour split robes in shades of grey and black, with leggings or trousers underneath, cut above the ankle and involving ornamental armour plates. Darsvana may choose longer, loser robes in sombre colours with subtle, decorative embroidery. Sainka might opt for bright, flowing robes with large prints, and the Kamagara wear practical robing in plain, earthen colours.

The Kubarey are a species whose homeworld is located within the Menthar Corridor, first encountered by the crew of the USS Garuda in 2391.

Name

  • Proper Name: Kubarey (plural: Kubarey)
  • Pronunciation: Koo-bar-ee

Territory

The Kubarey Confederation spans a large number of star systems in the Menthar Corridor, and their territory is estimated to be roughly equal in size to that of the Tholians and the Breen. The name and location of their home system is, as yet, unknown to the Federation.

Rho Aurigae

Known to be located at the edges of Kubarey territory, this system houses a temple retreat and was the site of their official first contact with Federation.

Anatomy and Physiology

Ananja, A Kubarey Female

The Kubarey bear considerable similarities to many other Alpha Quadrant species; they are sexually diamorphic and humanoid in appearance, almost hairless except for the hair on their head, eyebrows and eyelashes. They also possess a pair of caprine horns that begin to develop shortly after birth, located toward the posterior edge of the frontal bone. The horns of the female tend to be smaller and more compact than the male.

Skin colour ranges from a light, powder blue to a deep violet. Hair colour is more varied; white, greys and black are among the most common, and more rarely shades of blue. Eye colour is usually a shade of blue or violet, with reds and ambers much more uncommon.

Average height is between 1.78m (5'10'') and 1.88m (6'2'') for both sexes, with males exhibiting more muscle mass and heavier skeletons than the females. Relative to humans, Kubarey are approximately two to three times stronger than their counterparts.

Average life expectancy is approximately 800 years for both males and females, with physical maturity reached between the ages of 30 - 50.

Reproduction

Kubarey females have the ability to hold an embryo in suspension within their bodies. This happens after fertilisation, when a specific amino acid essential for foetal development is missing from the mother's diet. The modern diet means that this rarely occurs naturally, but is sometimes deliberately triggered by woman separated from their partners, or who have specific obligations to complete (such as an expedition or tour of duty away from home).

Telepathic Abilities

The Kubarey are not universally telepathic. The ability has been emerging in the population over recent generations, and there is considerable discussion over the appropriate way to deal with telepathic individuals. Currently, all telepaths are tested and registered, with restrictions placed upon how, when and where they may use their abilities.

Government

Kubarey goverment is a tetracameral in organisation, with four parliamentary chambers and a head of state with executive powers.

  • Sarakari Purvaja: The Council of Elders is a body of persons who form the Kubarey heads of state, and is comprised of the four leaders of the Prakarna. They have executive power to make treaties, declare war and appoint key officials in government, although such decisions are almost always made on the advice of the four chambers. In addition, they have the power to veto any legislation, and can dismiss the head of government and cabinet.
  • Sabha Anusya: The Chamber Elect - the lower of the Great Chambers, and the only elected chamber of government, it is the largest of the four and holds the most legislative powers. They are led by the Padari Pratham - the First Minister.
  • Sabha Mahatva: The Chamber of Merit - the upper of the Great Chambers, it consists of hereditary and appointed officials who review and amend bills proposed by the Chamber Elect. Its legislative powers are more limited, and cannot propose any laws or insert amendments relating to government finance or taxation.
  • Sabha Vidhi'dhanta: The Chamber of Law - an apolitical body holding powers to enact laws, supervise the judiciary, and appoint regional officials.
  • Sabha Sasamarthaka: The Chamber of Advocates - a group who act as a counterbalance to the Great Chambers. They have the power to reject legislation or deny official appointments if they believe they runs contrary to the Constitution or the popular rights of the people.

Society, Culture and Customs

The Four Virtues

All Kubarey aspire to live their lives according to the Four Virtues: wisdom, courage, duty and beauty. The interpretation of the virtues is often heavily dependant on which Prakarna the individual belongs to.

The Prakarna

Kubarey society revolves around an endogamous, hereditary caste system, which stratifies their population into specific groups with specific roles. While it is possible to move between groups, through adoption or marriage, such social movement is rare and was illegal for much of history.

The four castes - the Prakarna - are:

  • Darsvana: Scholars, educators, priests and medics.
  • Vala: The martial caste, including law enforcement and the military.
  • Kamagara: Farmers, builders, traders and craftsman.
  • Sainka: Performers, entertainers, artists and service providers.

The Darsvana and Vala share equivalent social status within Kubarey society; below them are the Kamagara, and below them are the Sainka.

There is a final group of people, the Sunya, who have, for one reason or another, no status in society. This Prakarna consists of those disowned by their families, criminals and orphans, as well as those descended from them. Historically, it also included the mentally and physically disabled, however this practice ended several centuries ago with the introduction of an equal rights convention.

The leader of the Darsvana is the Vidyadenai, a term which translates loosely to "most wise and holy". He or she attains the position by vote and it is held for the rest of their life. They must have education and experience in the priesthood and at least one scientific or medical discipline. The Vidyadenai is attended to by the Kharanavala, who is an attendant and advisor who supports the Vidyadenai in his duties.

Naming Conventions

Almost all Kubarey have a first name, at least one middle name and a family name. Their first name is entirely the selection of the child's family; it can be a virtue they hope their child will embody, the name of a favoured close relative or friend, or simply a name found pleasing.

The middle names are chosen by priests at the child's naming ceremony, usually conducted within the first year of birth. The names can include honoured ancestors, lesser deities, and notable historical figures. The belief is that the spirits of these individuals will watch over and guide the child through life.

Family

Kubarey marry in pairs, with the lower status partner taking the surname of the higher status one. In rare cases, such as when the two individuals are virtually equal in status, each partner may keep their family name, or they may choose a new one to share for their marriage.

Due to the ability of the Kubarey female to keep an embryo within stasis, marriage tradition involved the potential bride living with members of her husband's family for one year, during which they ensure that she eats a diet that would ensure any static pregnancy would resume development and come to term. In return, after the marriage the wife's family would deliver a gift equivalent to the year's worth of room and board to the husband's. This tradition is rarely observed to its full extent in modern times, and has evolved into the simple presentation of a gift to each set of parents.

Divorce is relatively rare, but without stigma, and both parties may remarry without prejudice.

As a result of their lengthy lifespan, it is rare to have more than one child in a home at any given time, and children are considered legal adults at the age of 75.

Apparel

Kubarey of both genders favour robes. The styling of the robes varies over time due to the vagaries of fashion, and an individual's Prakarna often plays into their clothing choices. For example, Vala often favour split robes in shades of grey and black, with leggings or trousers underneath, cut above the ankle and involving ornamental armour plates. Darsvana may choose longer, loser robes in sombre colours with subtle, decorative embroidery. Sainka might opt for bright, flowing robes with large prints, and the Kamagara wear practical robing in plain, earthen colours.

Individuals of all castes frequently decorate their horns with precious metals, paints or fabrics. Jewellery is frequently worn by males and females. Body art, both permanent and temporary, is not uncommon, and many Vala paint or tattoo their faces.

Religion and Spirituality

The Kubarey follow a polytheistic belief system, and each deity has its own religion, texts and rites. In the past, the differences between the texts of the different religions have been a source of social conflict and war.

  • Vasresthi Satya: The head of the pantheon, and the creator of all. Vasresthi Satya embodies both male and female characteristics and birthed the universe through song, each star a footfall in an eternal dance.
  • Padaridavai: The first son of Vasresthi Satya, and the twin of Vahasamara. Handsome, intelligent and wise, he teaches and heals his brothers and sisters. The patron of the Darsvana.
  • Vahasamara: The first daughter of Vasresthi Satya, and the twin of Padaridavai. Fierce and strong, she is the defender of Dhan'yannada - heaven. The patron of the Vala.
  • Vosamajhana: The second son and third child of Vasresthi Satya. Practical and serious, he built the Nirvasi Devisvara - the home of the gods. He is the patron of the Kamagara.
  • Madasarvisa: The second daughter and fourth child of Vasresthi Satya. She is beauty and grace incarnate, and brings laughter and joy to the halls of Nirvasi Devisvara. She is the patron of the Sainka.
  • Jhalavastu: The child of Padaridavai and Vahasamara, who in their arrogance, believed their union could create a perfect being. Jhalavastu is a deformed monster, possessed of a vicious cunning and formidable strength. When they realised their error, Padaridavai and Vahasamara banished their child from Dhan'yannada to the darkest corner of the world.

Technology

Little is currently know about the full capabilities of Kubarey technology. What little intelligence has been gathered indicates that it is at least on a par with the major powers of the Alpha Quadrant, including the Federation. In some aspects, it may be considerably more advanced.

Economy

The specific details of Kubarey economics are not known, except that they are entirely self-sufficient and do not trade outside of their own territory and people.

Military

The full extent and capabilities of the Kubarey military are not currently known, and only one warship has been encountered -- the Heart of Vahasamara, which was able to disable the USS Garuda within ninety-nine seconds. Given that an entire segment of Kubarey society is devoted to martial professions, it deemed likely they maintain an extensive military force.

Notable Individuals

  • Ananja: The current Vidyadenai.
