Background
Kaleb was born the fourth and final child of Avril and Sofia Foss, aboard the Yfory – a civilian freighter whose cargo had a nasty tendency to be what might charitably be referred to as extra-legal. Life on the Yfory was fascinating and gave Kaleb a wide range of experience with many new alien races, but honestly, eighty percent of the ship’s dealings were with Ferengi, and the other twenty percent were with mostly-human Federation customs officials. Kaleb was also kept away from most of the business side of things, and the family sold the ship and settled down on earth when Kaleb was the ripe old age of eight.
They sold the Yfory to a Cardassian businessman and moved to a coastal home just outside the city of Acre, on Earth. Lucas signed up with a civilian shipping firm shortly after his eighteenth birthday, and while Kaleb has kept in touch with his brother over the years, they have never managed to be back in the same physical place together since that day. Janine became a mostly unsuccessful writer, using her childhood in deep space as the inspiration for much of her ‘fictional’ work – and eventually moved to London, where she proceeded to marry local tailor Brian Teagarden.
Kaleb had never been terribly close to his oldest two siblings, but had always been best friends with Perry. While Kaleb had been listless and generally unfocused through his childhood and teen years, once Perry joined the Starfleet Academy, Kaleb knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life: emulate his big brother, just like he had always done.
And so when Kaleb turned eighteen, he applied to join the Academy.
And was rejected.
Kaleb worked over the next year to improve himself, and applied again the following year. He was accepted this time, for some reason. Once in the Academy, Kaleb proved himself to be fast on his feet and a quick thinker, but often failed to prepare or study. More than once, he left studying for a test to the last minute, and had to pull all-nighters that led to subpar test results. “Living up to your potential.” Was a constant theme of the many professors who would pull him aside after classes, and Kaleb would always promise them that he would straighten up and fly right – and he would follow through, at least for a few weeks.
In the end, it was probably a small miracle that Kaleb managed to graduate the Academy. He graduated last in his class, but he was proud of the fact that he’d gotten himself through it. He had always been better in the field than in tests, and so it was only up from here.
