After his transfer off the Challenger Barnes learnt of his wifes disappearance, Ashley being an accomplaished pilot was on a supply mission when her shuttle disapeared, no wreckage was ever found. Barnes was injured, three weeks after the crash of the Avandar. During the attack an arrow entered theough the upper left hand side rear of his back and enered his upper lung and right Ventricle.
