He was later transferred to the Daris Colony, where he earned the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned as Chief Science Officer. Speed began service as the Assistant Chief Engineer aboard the USS Kodiak on stardate 237606.08. Upon the Kodiak's decommission on stardate 237608.05, he was transferred to the USS Kodiak-A.
