A writer ID number (also known as an author ID or a fleet writer serial) is a unique ten digit code associated with each specific member of UFOP: StarBase 118. Writer ID numbers are utilized to track contributions by community members across ships and characters, ensuring that contributions are searchable OOC. Every writer is assigned one writer ID number, which should be appended to their email signature for all emails sent on fleet channels.

You can find more information on the components of writer ID numbers on this subpage.

The writer ID number is for OOC (out of character) identification purposes only. It differs from a Starfleet Serial Number, which is for IC (in character) purposes only. Your writer ID number should always be included in your signature each time you send an email to one of UFOP: Starbase 118's mailing lists. This number is never used in character in the body of a SIM and belongs to a writer rather than a character. You will be given a writer ID number when you join the fleet, which will not change for as long as you are a member.

Example signature with writer ID number

Please utilize the following format for all signatures appended to all emails you send, both IC and OOC, in the fleet. This includes ship SIM and OOC lists, as well as any taskforces you are a member of (e.g. Academy, Publicity team etc.):

Rank and character name
Duty post
Ship name
Writer ID number

For example:

Captain Tristan Wolf
Commanding Officer
USS Phoenix-B
P237106TW0

How to easily use your writer ID number

There are a number of ways you can easily use your writer ID number on all emails you send IC and OOC.

Email client signature feature

Most email clients allow you to automatically attach a signature. Using this feature is the easiest way to make sure you don't forget to include your writer ID number in your sims for all of your characters and the mails you send when participating in OOC groups. In fact, once it's part of your automatic signature, you won't even have to think about it! It just takes a few seconds to set up, and you only have to do it once.

Instructions for some of the major mail providers can be found below. If you have difficulty following any of these tutorials, please contact your ship's staff.

Text file

Create your signature, like the one above, and add it to a text file which you save to your desktop. Copy the signature out of that file each time you send an email, and paste it onto the bottom of the email.

Email templates

Best if you use your email for non-simming purposes: Some email clients, like Gmail, have a "template" or "canned response" feature, which allows you to save an email template and use it when you send an email. For more information about using canned responses in Gmail, see this tutorial.

Text expanders

Another option to consider is a "text expander," which monitors your typing and then "expands" a set of characters into a longer, pre-set message. For example, you could type sighere, which would then automatically be replaced with your full sig.
