Backstory/Timeline

Douglas had a fairly ordinary upbringing on Earth. He father, a marine, spent a lot of time off-planet during his youth leaving him at home with his Mother This coupled with his Father's death in 2350 left him with very few memories of him.

When war broke out with the Dominion in 2373, Douglas signed up as a marine to (in his eyes and words) protect the federation and their way of life. His Mother heavily opposed his decision not wanting to loose both her Son and Husband due to their idealism. She later passed away in 2374.

He was heavily wounded in 2375 during the Second Battle of Chin'toka. A good deal of the left side of his body was sheared when the ship he served on received heavy bombardment. Doctors on board here able to stabilize him however, and he later received cybernetic implants. They did not take well however, restricting his movement and effectively ending his military carer.

After his medical discharge Douglas slipped into a heavy depression. For the next five years Douglas nearly succumbed to drugs and alcoholism on numerous occasions, fortunately his remaining family where able to support him during this time, keeping him from self-destructing. Eventually he developed an addiction to his painkillers. When his family found out they sent him to a rehabilitation facility.

While there he was encouraged, amongst other things, to read as part of his rehabilitation. Douglas soon developed a taste for History, particularly that of battles averted through diplomacy. Doctors there speculated his fascination stemmed from his experiences in the Dominion War.

After his discharge in 2380, Douglas decided on a new course on life - diplomacy. He spent the next year studying every text he could find on the subject, before enrolling in a Law degree in 2382. After completing his degree in 2386, Douglas applied to Starfleet Diplomatic Corps and was eventually assigned as a diplomatic aide on Starbase 118 in 2387.

On star date 239011.07, Starbase 118 Ops was struck by a giant ion storm, seemingly with a mind of its own. In fact, it was comprised of four separate storms, each one housing a primal entity relating to one of the basic elements - earth, air, fire and water. He was taken over by Brine, Element of Water.
