Maggie Alexander was the daughter of a laborer and a substitute teacher who still live in Vladivostok.  When she enlisted in Starfleet she saw it as a way to improve her lot in life--and achieve social standing.  She zealously guarded the privileges of rank as she rose in the fleet and courted the attentions of the son of a Starfleet family when she was a crewman and he was a layabout tinkerer.  Andrew Canis only joined applied to Starfleet Academy at his wife's behest.  Her ambition drove his career.  Maggie was never able to be a "Starfleet spouse" because, while officer-enlisted marriages do not violate fraternization laws if the couple is married before the officer attains a commission, they are still frowned upon and both Maggie and Andrew did not want to draw attention to their fleet status.
