Ensign James Canis is currently onboard USS Discovery-B. He was assigned to Discovery as aHCO, but his formal assignment is under review pending disciplinary action.

Appearance / Personality

James is tall, skinny, even gawky. He feels entitled to a successful career in Starfleet and doesn't care who knows it. He's smart but not shy about showing his brains off. He's not very sensitive to other people's feelings--in fact, he's pretty much oblivious to a great deal of the important parts of social interaction.

The Canis family have served in Starfleet since it was the Earth Starfleet. While never producing prominent officers like the Archer, Kirk, or Paris family, the Canis have a home in Marin County, the traditional residence of Starfleet families, filled with souvenirs from across time and space.

Maggie Alexander was the daughter of a laborer and a substitute teacher who still live in Vladivostok. When she enlisted in Starfleet she saw it as a way to improve her lot in life--and achieve social standing. She zealously guarded the privileges of rank through her career at BUPERS.

Maggie courted the attentions of the son of a Starfleet family when she was a crewman and he was a layabout tinkerer. Andrew Canis only joined applied to Starfleet Academy at his wife's behest. Her ambition drove his career. Maggie was never able to be a "Starfleet spouse" because, while officer-enlisted marriages do not violate fraternization laws if the couple is married before the officer attains a commission, they are still frowned upon and both Maggie and Andrew did not want to draw unfavorable attention.

When James was ten, his father's ship was almost destroyed by the Borg in the Battle of Sector 001. Fearing for her husbands safety, Hyacinth was able to procure Ethan an assignment at the Utopia Planita shipyards, which was increasing production in the aftermath of the beginning of the Dominion War. Ethan loved the job and spent the rest of his career there, eventually becoming Chief of Staff to the shipyard's commanding officer.
