The USS Darwin was part of the original task force sent into the Ithassa Region to establish the Starfleet Presence. Primarily a transport, equipment and supply vessel, its first survey mission into the Ithassa landed the Darwin in the Igloo Cluster where it encountered the Grendellai, whom is believed to have hijacked the Darwin.
The USS Independence was sent to join the Darwin on its survey mission, but prior to joining the ship they received an emergency distress call from its commanding officer, Captain A'Ha. By the time the Independence showed up, the Darwin was incapacitated. The boarding party sent over by then Fleet Captain Jessa Anasassi discovered there were dead Romulans aboard.
What emerged was a conspiracy that to the day, has never entirely been answered. It was believed, at the time, the remains of the USS Darwin was the actual ship, but there is evidence to support the USS Darwin may still be out there. It's final fate remains a mystery.
