Background

Kirkington Algernon-Greene Bean IV was born in Belgravia, London, Earth, on Stardate 237404.15 (15 April 2374). His parents are Kirkington Algernon Bean III (b. 2332) and Gwathmey Perdita Bean (née Greene, b. 2333). He has an older sister, Fenella Flora Bean-Ó Bríain (b. 2371), and a younger brother, Cornelius Tarquin Bean (b. 2376).

Bean was educated at a grammar school before attending the University of Alpha Centauri, where he studied flight dynamics. After graduating from university in 2396, he enlisted in Starfleet. He entered service at the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class due to his university qualification, and was posted to Deep Space 224. In July 2397, he was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class and transferred to the USS Resolution.

In 2398, Bean survived the destruction of the USS Resolution. He was the 102nd and final survivor to be recused from the disaster. Shortly after, he was offered and accepted an assignment to provide transportation to former Federation President Nan Bacco during her 30-planet lecture and book tour. On stardate 239810.22, the runabout carrying Bean, Bacco, and four others vanished near the Argaya sector. After an extended search operation, a team rescued Bean and most of the passengers, although two perished in the crash.

In November 2398, in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service in saving the life of the former president, Starfleet conferred on Bean a field promotion to the rank of ensign. This means that Bean is technically a Starfleet officer despite not having graduated from—or even having attended—the Academy, a fact about which he is mildly self-conscious.
