Quarters and Workspaces

  • Quarters: Rachel has quarters on Deck 19 of the USS Constitution-B that she shares with her roommate, T'Ama. Her quarters are mostly organized, but her desk is frequently filled with work projects. Rachel has nicknamed the food replicator "Dunsel" for its constant unreliability, which T'Ama has since added googly eyes to. Rachel's most treasured possession is a locked climate-controlled storage crate. It contains her 22nd century Starfleet uniform, phase pistol, communicator, and scanner. They are her only surviving possessions from the Forthwith, having been on her person when she arrived in the 24th century.
  • Engineering Support Office 3: One of several offices for general use adjacent to Main Engineering on Deck 36 of the USS Constitution-B, Rachel frequently takes over Engineering Support Office 3 for various pet projects or when she is doing research and development for a mission. The room is equipped with a large viewscreen, holoprojectors, a large drafting table, and multiple workbenches. Several buleprints from previous projects such as the Flores Tidesuit or Type-11 Aquashuttle retrofit. Whenever she is working in the office, there are at least two cups from the Brew Continuum scattered across the office.

Prized Possessions

  • United Earth Starfleet Uniform: The United Earth Starfleet command division uniform with commander’s pips that Rachel was wearing when she came into the 24th century.
  • United Earth Starfleet Equipment: Rachel’s phase pistol, scanner, and communicator are relics from her time on the Forthwith. She keeps them in a memory box in her quarters along with her old uniform.
  • Starfleet Academy Class Ring (2397): Class ring from Rachel’s second stint at Starfleet Academy, her first keepsake of her new life.
  • Technical Journal: Each project that Rachel works on is documented in an old spiral-bound notebook that she takes with her between assignments, as well as on an isolinear chip that she keeps tucked in the front cover of the notebook.

History

Family Background

Rachel Flores is the youngest child of Martin and Shannon Flores. Martin Flores’ family had lived in Texas since the early 20th century and was well-connected within the community. Martin was a criminal defense lawyer and volunteer public defender. Growing up, he split his time between his birthplace, Houston, and his mother’s home town of Albany. After law school he moved back to Texas and partnered with an old family friend to form a new law firm in Houston.

Shannon Moore was one of the earliest boomers. Her parents served on an interplanetary freighter and she spent her formative years aboard the freighter. Shannon had only seen Earth a handful of times by the time she was six years old. Shannon attended primary school in Lucan, Ireland and would stay with her grandparents when her parents were in space. After graduating college, she began working for the United Earth government as a paralegal.

Shannon and Martin met at court during a break between cases and decided to get coffee together before their respective next cases. From there, the two went on a series of dates and eventually married in 2118. Their oldest child, Eric, was born in 2120. Rachel was born three years later in 2123.

Childhood

Rachel grew up in Houston, where both of her parents worked. She got along very well with her older brother Eric and was surrounded by a large extended family of cousins, aunts, uncles, and great-grandparents. She would also spend some summers away from home, either in Albany with her paternal grandmother or in Ireland with her maternal grandparents. Rachel was always rather bright, but she never had any concrete idea of what she wanted to do when she grew up.

A family trip to San Francisco in 2135 was the inspiration that she was looking for. Being in the city at the heart of Human space exploration ignited her latent passion for spaceflight. After a week of seeing everything that Starfleet and the United Earth Space Probe Agency had built, Rachel was determined to get in to Starfleet Academy as soon as she could apply. The next five years were mostly dedicated to improving her academic performance and independently studying spaceflight and astrophysics. The walls of her bedroom were soon covered in star charts and blueprints of spacecraft.

Starfleet Academy and Early Starfleet Service

Rachel’s enthusiasm and hard work paid off and her application to Starfleet Academy was accepted. She enjoyed her time at Starfleet Academy and observed the area around the Academy grow as the training academy became more established. Between classes she volunteered to help with campus beautification and landscaping, was a founding member of the Starfleet Academy swim team, and attended the grand opening of a bar near campus that would eventually become The Launching Pad. While she was trained primarily for engineering, she applied for the position of helm control before graduating.

Hopes that a Warp Five ship would be active in the fleet by her graduation proved to be too optimistic, and Rachel was instead assigned to the Neptune-class Saratoga as the ship’s pilot. She served on the Saratoga from June of 2145 to January of 2149. In that time she was promoted to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) and received a commendation for inventive thinking. Extensive damage to the Saratoga during an ion storm necessitated several months in drydock. Rachel was then transferred to the Ganges-class Pioneer. The two years on the Pioneer were uneventful, but did result in a change in duty post from flight control back to engineering.

Assignment patch from the Forthwith

Rachel transferred to the Intrepid-class Victory on Stardate 215201.13. She retained the change to engineering from the Pioneer and quickly rose through the hierarchy of the engineering staff. She attained the position of chief engineer in just over a year. Rachel remained on the Victory for two more years as chief engineer, and made many friends on the ship.

Coalition of Planets and the Romulan War

The formation of the Coalition of Planets and the start of the Earth-Romulan War brought changes to Rachel’s career. Starfleet Command transferred her from the Victory to the refit NX-class Forthwith as the ship’s chief engineer. She was saddened to say goodbye to the crew of the Victory, but serving on a Warp Five ship had always been her dream assignment. During her tenure as chief engineer, the Forthwith was involved in multiple joint operations with other members of the Coalition and continued normal operations for several months.

This status quo was interrupted by the start of the Earth-Romulan War. The Forthwith served on the front lines of the war from middle 2156 until its disappearance in early 2157. Another change came when the Forthwith’s first officer was killed during a skirmish. Starfleet was spread thin at the time, so Captain Rex McMillan promoted Rachel to first officer.

Back to the Future

While patrolling a remote system on Stardate 215703.13, the Forthwith encountered a temporal anomaly and was pulled out of normal spacetime. The ship crashed in an unknown location and suffered severe structural damage and dozens of casualties. The crew of the Forthwith encountered a similarly stranded away team from a 24th century Starfleet ship, the USS Blackwell. An attempt to use the Forthwith’s warp reactor to reopen the anomaly necessitated the survivors returning to the 24th century with the Blackwell away team. The Forthwith survivors were brought to Deep Space 26 and turned over to the Department of Temporal Investigations. The death of Captain McMillan had left Rachel as the de facto leader of the survivors. Meanwhile, in Flores’ own time, the disappearance of the Forthwith was classified as another casualty of the Romulan War. Rachel Flores and the rest of the crew were declared killed in action on Stardate 215805.12. The Flores family were informed of her “death” and mourned her loss.

Starfleet Academy… Again

The survivors were brought to the Department of Temporal Investigation Reintegration Center in Paris on Earth to assist with their adjustment to their new situation in the 24th century. The entire group had their treatment overseen by Lieutenant Commander Gerim, the facility's lead psychologist. Rachel continued in her role as the leader of the Forthwith crew and spent more time helping the rest of the survivors than focusing on her own recovery. Outwardly, she seemed to adapt remarkably quickly to her new situation. When her case was closed by the DTI, she applied to rejoin Starfleet and get back to work exploring the final frontier. However, the reply from Starfleet was not what she had hoped for. Since she had been declared dead and was not an active member of Starfleet during the foundation of the Federation, Flores had not been granted a commission under the new Federation Starfleet. She would be required to go through a condensed training program at Starfleet Academy and start her career over in order to meet modern standards.

The situation was not ideal, but Rachel did understand the very limited utility an engineer more than two centuries out of date would provide. She agreed to undergo retraining and selected both Propulsion Systems and Components Engineering as specializations. Over four semesters at Starfleet Academy, Rachel was educated in 24th century technology and history. She passed her final exams with flying colors and was commissioned as an ensign engineering officer. For her first assignment, she was sent to Væron Colony to assist the Romulan Republic with benamite mining operations. This assignment immediately tested her ability to put the 22nd century and her feelings about the Romulans aside. This was not helped by her being kidnapped by fungus-based lifeforms and nearly mutated into one. She was rescued by the crew of the USS Gorkon and briefly joined them as an engineer. However, she requested an assignment closer to Earth only a few weeks later. Not all of the survivors form the Forthwith were so quick to bounce back and she was eager to help the rest of her family with getting used to life in the 24th century. She split her time between a DTI recovery facility and her assignment to the Division of Planetary Operations.

USS Constitution-B

With the other Forthwith survivors on a more stable footing, Rachel applied for another transfer. This time she was sent to the USS Constitution-B in the Marchlands. Immediately upon arrival, she joined the crew in an undercover operation to rescue their commanding officer. She adopted the persona of "Lily O'Connor" and joined the crew of the Ra’khoi. The rescue mission was successful and Rachel was able to become a part of the crew proper after such a hasty introduction. She got to know many of her new crewmates and got involved in several engineering projects. Rachel worked as an agent of the enigmatic chief engineer on the senior staff, serving as a liaison to the bridge and command officers. She was heavily involved in preparing for the Xindi Aquatic state wedding the ship's staff attended. The happiness pheromone impacted her heavily, and she begged not to be removed from under its influence. However, she did recover with time and focused on her work. Her primary duties in Main Engineering are now specialist designs and prototyping in the engineering labs.

Relationships

Martin Flores
Father (Deceased)

Martin always encouraged his daughter's sense of adventure. He wanted her to have plenty of fun experiences while growing up and to always try new things. Rachel enjoyed going on hikes with her father and brother on the weekends or experimenting with an old car in the garage with her father's help. He and Shannon Flores are buried next to Rachel's "grave" in a cemetery Houston.

Shannon Flores, née Moore
Mother (Deceased)

While her father encouraged her to take risks and try new things, Rachel's mother was there to reassure her when she failed and help her follow her dreams. On her graduation day, Shannon gave her daughter a spyglass to commemorate her achievement. The spyglass was something that Rachel carried with her throughout her career and was very saddened when it was one of her personal possessions left behind on the wreck of the Forthwith.

Eric Flores
Brother (Deceased)

Eric and Rachel were always involved in a friendly sibling rivalry. The two would turn almost everything into a competition without ever letting the rivalry become too serious. Eric went on to become a doctor and had several children. He was hit very hard by his sister's death, and one of his daughter has the middle name Rachel in honor of her. Three of his children entered Starfleet in Rachel's footsteps. Eric Flores and his descendants became a family with a long history of Starfleet service.

Naomi Stone
Very Distant Grand-Niece

Rachel accidentally discovered that one of her classmates at the Academy was actually descended from her brother Eric. She hadn't told Naomi how she was from the past until helping her study for a history class. Naomi mentioned that one of her ancestors was the first officer on a ship that was lost during the Earth-Romulan War. The two have stayed in contact and Naomi was able to share some old family stories that public records couldn't tell Rachel.

Lystra
Friend

Rachel met Lystra undercover as pirates right after arriving aboard the Conny. Lystra and Rachel were on the same team, and the tactical officer was impressed by Rachel's technical ingenuity. When Lystra lost her right hand during the rescue of Jalana, Lystra asked Rachel to design a replacement cybernetic. Rachel was honored by that show of trust and put her all in to designing an excellent cybernetic hand. Since then, she has checked in with Lystra and considers the Boslic woman her first friend on the ship.

Elias Kincaid
Friend

A fellow "cowboy" and proprietor of the Saloon. Rachel was comforted by the bartender's friendly demeanor and confided her temporal situation to him while swapping Starfleet stories. He introduced her to the Saloon's fusion cuisine menu. The Saloon is a new favorite place for Rachel to relax and socialize. She also tries to give him business by ordering delivery when she is unable to leave engineering for meals.

T'Ama
Roommate

When she first arrived on the USS Constitution-B, Rachel accidentally checked a box on her transfer paperwork stating that she was fine with a roommate. For a long time, she had been assigned to double ensign's quarters with no roommate in the other berth. However, after a pest control problem she was assigned a surprise roommate in the form of Ensign T'Ama. While unexpected, Rachel has treated it as a great opportunity.

Ollo
Colleague

Ollo is a Bolian officer transferred to engineering after an accident in his original posting in science. His accident-prone nature and constant nervous behavior causing issues in Main Engineering gave Rachel plenty of trouble. After an accident with the Aquashuttle retrofit project, Rachel took it upon herself to be a professional mentor for Ollo. After a heart-to-heart in Engineering Support Office Three, she was able to get through to him and seemingly convinced him to transfer back to the science department.
