History
Approximately 2,750 years ago the twin moons that orbited their world collided and shattered into millions of pieces. Many of these pieces rained down onto the surface of their world. The damage was wide spread and millions of people were killed. Food became scarce and wide spread mayhem swept over the land as rioting, murder and numerous other criminal acts were committed in the name of survival.
Most experts agree that it was this one pivotal moment in their history that has defined their entire development as a people since then and it is estimated that it took between 100 and 200 years for them to recover from the devastation caused by this cataclysmic event. By that time less than a 10th of their total population had survived. It altered their way of life, their beliefs, their culture and their adoption of casual violence as an accepted daily part of their lives.
From then till now not much has changed. The strong get richer, the weak get poorer and crime, violence and corruption are an everyday fact of life. Not even their eventual discovery of space travel has altered their perverse way of life. Now they just have more people and more worlds on which to practice it.
The first alien species they encountered were the Bolians and this was not a peaceful encounter. The Moropa tried to rob the obviously weaker and seemingly defenseless Bolians. This failed. They were beaten off due to the more advanced technology available to the Bolians. Since then the Moropa have hated and distrusted the Bolians who they still view as only being worth of being prey.
Now their ships prey on the weak and defenseless, leaving no witnesses behind and no conclusive proof that they were involved if they can prevent it.
By 2366 they were forced into an uneasy peace with the Bolians by the Federation after Star Fleet sent 5 cruisers to deal with the steadily increasing attacks on Bolian shipping by supposed Moropa pirates. After Star Fleet had been forced to destroy more than 30 of these pirate ships the attacks petered off and the Federation diplomats were able to convince the Moropa government that any further attacks would be considered a declaration of war.
Since then they have restricted their pirate activities to vessels not belonging to any Federation member world.
Government
They have a central government that is plagued with assassinations, corruption and infighting. The numbers serving on their council can change from week to week and only the gifted when it comes to back stabbing, lying and treachery last long.
Description
The Moropa have blue tinted skin with broad but typical harsh looking humanoid faces. They have 4 blue tendrils of flesh, 2 that grow out of the bottom of their chins and one more on each side of these. These seem to serve no purpose. They have matted black hair, intense eyes and often weave decorations into their hair or wear rings on their face tendrils.
Most male Moropa are between 6’ and 6’4” with strong, husky builds, wide shoulders and deep chests. The females are slightly shorter with a less muscular physique.
Physiology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids. However there blue tinted skin is indicative of the nickel based blood flowing through their systems.
Psychology
They are an extremely violent humanoid race with a reputation for brutality and aggression that makes them almost as feared as the Nausicaans. They also have a longstanding hostility with their closest neighbors the Bolians of the Bolarus system. This resulted from their initial first contact and has grown more hostile with time.
For the most part they all seem to be out to make a profit for themselves and to heck with anyone else. They are just as libel to stab each other in the back as they are to stab a stranger.
Religion
They have a twisted pantheon of deities which are divide into two groups or families. The first consists of twin brothers that tried to kill each other, a sister that enslaved their father and another that slept with every male deity including her father and brothers.
The other family has a brother that killed his father, a sister who cooked and served him to the other family, another brother that betrayed his father and another brother that only cared about getting paid for the weapons and chains he made that were used to enslave and kill the elder gods, their fathers.
Mythology
Much like their pantheon of gods their legends and tales all seem twisted. They tend to be more concerned with detailing the many crimes, deceits and betrayals that the various gods and goddesses have committed against each other.
Society
They have no organized justice system, might makes right and the strong or cunning can get vengeance if their mean and tough enough. As for their communities, they are built haphazardly with little care towards infrastructure, recreational facilities or access to health and educational facilities. Trash is everywhere, people live in the alleys and gutters and death is a frequent and sudden visitor in many communities.
Culture
They care nothing about any type of artistic expression or piece of art except for how much it is worth and how much they can get for it on the black market.
Customs
The rings attached to the tendrils that jut out of the bottom of their faces indicate the amount of power, wealth and strength that individual has and controls. The size, type and number of rings attached to their tendrils all indicate this to anyone who sees them.
Technology
Since weapons technology is over a century behind the Federation, their dreams of conquest were destroyed immediately after entering space. Now they do not even waste time trying to catch up by legitimate means. Now they steal new technologies or trade for them on the black market.
Economy
There are very few species that are willing to trust them to deal in good faith. As a result they have few long term trade deals and only slightly more short term ones. Most deals are between individuals and not governments as the Moropa government has an even less savory reputation than the Moropa have themselves. The result if a poor quality of life for most of their people but no seems to care. For the most part they all seem to be out to make a profit for themselves and to heck with anyone else.
Military
They have never had a very strong military. Their early first contact with the Bolians and the resulting animosity that resulted did spark a minor flurry of ship building. However this was abandoned fairly quickly as the futility of the situation was soon apparent. Not only could they not compete technologically but the Bolians were a part of a major military organization that they knew they never stood a chance against.
What they do have is more like a fleet of smugglers and pirates pretending to be a military defensive force. There is very little similarity in design or capabilities between any of their ships, even those that have roughly the same hull shape and configuration.
Star Fleet Intelligence has determined that they have approximately 200 frigate class vessels, more than 50 destroyers and an unknown number of cruisers that sometimes claim to be part of their defense force and sometimes independent depending on what suits their needs at the time.
Federation Intelligence Files
In 2366 they maintained an uneasy truce with the Bolians and were briefly suspected of the abduction of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but the technology used did not resemble theirs.
In ???? a criminal by the name of Kav-Nhoo lead a team of terrorists in taking hostage the captain, 1st officer and a number of other key personnel from the USS Constitution-B in the medical facility onboard Deep Space 285. He escaped with his team but a search of records showed that he was actually serving time in a Klingon prison at the time of the incident.
