The Sixth House of Betazed is one of the ancient noble houses on Betazed. To be a member of such a social class in Betazoid culture is to be considered descendants of the Goddess, Karawati, herself and a part of influential ancestry. The Sixth House is considered the House of Heart and Life - tasked with promoting the hearty and vivacious enjoyment of life.
Broadly speaking, the modern interpretation of the Sixth House's mission is one of maintaining the 'liveliness' or 'spirit' of Betazed and bolstering the relevancy of the Noble Houses - though various families and family members often vary on their personal take on the House's motivations.
A jaded Betazoid might describe the Sixth House's mission using the old Earth phrase, "bread and circuses," - vital distraction to appease and entertain the common folk into continued obedience. A member of the Sixth House, however, may feel that only stuffy ingrates believe entertainment to be frivolous.
It is perhaps, no surprise then, that the Sixth House is deeply involved in the landscape of political gossip and tabloids on Betazed and is often associated with scandal - though they are rarely at the center of it themselves.
History
In 2300, The Third, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth and Twelfth Houses of Betazed join together to demand land from the Ninth House of Betazed. Their claim is that their undeveloped land was loaned to the Ninth House by other houses centuries earlier for the benefit of all of Betazed, but there is no historical record of this ever happening. As a result, the Ninth House denies their claims and sticks to the position that it’s their land. This becomes a political issue between the houses, who demand "their" now agriculturally rich land back.
In 2341 the Third, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth, Twelfth houses join together to begin unprecedented legal action in the Betazoid Government Council against the Ninth house to get "their" land back.
Also In 2341, The Fifth House of Betazed revealed that Astradem Ukinix of the Ninth House of Betazed was having an affair with the then matriarch of the Tenth House. Subsequently, the Fifth House, being the "House of Nobility", warned all of the house matriarchs not to engage in "unsanctioned and secret romantic relationships" with members of other houses. This resulted in the then Matriarch of the Fourth House of Betazed confessing to having an affair - also with Astradem Ukinix[1]. In response, the Fourth, Sixth and Tenth houses of Betazed threatened the Ninth House of Betazed with a deliberately frivolous legal case at the Betazoid Government Council, designed to bog down the Ninth House. To avoid this, the Ninth House negotiated the betrothal of Astradem Ukinix to a Sixth house noble to appease them, allowing for joint ownership of their claimed lands. The Sixth house accepted the proposal, but the deal fell through when Astradem declined to participate. The Ninth House then attempted to appease the upset Sixth House by offering betrothal of Vaxa Ukinix, however that deal fell through when Vaxa revealed she was pregnant to a Ninth House employee.
In 2368, all legal action by the Third, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth and Twelfth houses against the Ninth House finally succeeded. As a result, The Sixth House received ownership of a vast amount of land from the Ninth House.
In 2375, The Fourth house in conjunction with the Third, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth and Twelfth houses unofficially took over administration of Ninth House, given its weakened position as a result of the Dominion War. An employee of the Fourth House was appointed to lead the administration. In 2376, the appointed administration legally became official after the Matriarch of the Ninth House reluctantly agreed to cede control.
