Personal History
Kare'en's mother and father come from different valleys in the same mountainous region of the planet Halii. Due to the remoteness of the area, they could not speak each other's dialect when they first met. Kare'en's parents are dedicated farmers and don't really understand why he joined Starfleet. They are still proud of him; they just wish he would write home more. Kare'en's older sister is frustrated at the aggravation he has put their parents through. As the oldest child, she wants to make sure that he never forgets his duties to the family. Kare'en's younger brother looks up to Kare'en, but sees his joining Starfleet as something he himself never could do.
As a young child, Kare'en was the sort who always had to see what was over the next ridge, what was over the next valley. The fact that his parents grew up speaking different languages made him sensitive to cultural differences at a young age, and also very curious about cultural and societal differences. He's been using the word "xenologist" ever since a Federation xenologist came to their farm to study Haliian mountain culture. Kare'en's curiosity about different cultures is what let him to join Starfleet, in the hopes of becoming a xenologist himself. He led a rather idyllic life on Halii, and tends to be a bit naïve. While he is very curious about other cultures, he is somewhat shy and sometimes has trouble interacting with others on a one-on-one basis. While he loves Starfleet, he also has a tendency to get homesick. His mild empathic abilities (roughly a 3 on the standard empath scale, but also sensitive to background emotions) and his shy personality make him want to avoid confrontation; in a hostile situation, he will either try to play the peacemaker between the opposed parties, or simply walk away. In his free time, he tends to read about cultures he finds exceptionally interesting, listening to Vulcan harp recordings, and collecting memorabilia from early 20th century Earth.
Professional History
Due to Halii's "backwoods" status in regards to the Federation, Kare'en entered Starfleet Academy somewhat later than the norm. He was a reasonably good student, but tended to be outshone by his more assertive classmates. He excelled in the soft sciences, did well in the hard sciences and medicine, but only average in protocol and command, and rather poorly in tactics. He was very eager to please his teachers, but made only a few close friends among his fellow students.
During his first posting, as Science Officer on the USS Constitution, Kare'en showed himself to be a hard worker and a team player. He seemed *very* surprised by a relatively fast sequence of initial promotions. He was later transferred to the USS Phoenix-C, under the command of Commander, and then Captain, Anassasi. When the FO of the Phoneix took an unexpected LOA, Kare'en was promoted to First Officer, against his initial resistance.
In spite of that resistance, Kare'en proved himself to be a capable and dutiful command officer. When Captain Anassasi transferred to the USS Independence, Kare'en went with her. He has grown more and more and more comfortable with his command duties, fulfilling them to the best of his abilities. He still tries to keep up with his scientific interests, as his duties allow. Kare'en seems to be well-liked by most of his shipmates, but has formed close friendships with only a few.
He has since served as the Commanding Officer of the USS Wallace and Deep Space 17.
