Personality
Growing up in a family of over-achievers, Eliaan harbors the deeply held belief that he does not match up. He has spent much of his life attempting to please his Father and older brother and desperately wanting them to respect him and treat him as a peer. He even followed in their footsteps and planned to become a surgeon before changing his specialty to trauma medicine in his second year at Starfleet Medical.
It wasn’t until medical school that he was able identify his own strengths and has slowly grown in confidence. He is very hard-working; eager to please and easily hurt when he feels embarrassed. In social situations, he tends to hold back and doesn’t like to be the center of attention, preferring interactions with smaller groups.
Family
Parents: Eliaan is the youngest of the four children of Professor Kalana Deron, a professor of xenobiology, and her husband Dr Farren Deron, a cardiac surgeon. He has a very close relationship with his mother but struggles to live up to what he sees as his father’s expectations of him.
Siblings: The eldest of the Deron children is Dr Ewar Deron. Like his father, Ewar is a cardiac surgeon and is widely expected to surpass his ability and standing in the medical community. However, like Eliaan, he feels great pressure to maintain the high standards expected of him.
The elder of Eliaan’s sisters, Dr Qwara Deron, is a research chemist, currently based on a Federation civilian science station
His final sibling is his sister Deone Deron, who is four years older than him. The black sheep of the family, Deone bucked family tradition and didn’t become a doctor. She spent several years travelling before returning to Betazed to become a sculptor. The two regularly correspond and are particularly close.
Spouse: N/A
Children: None
Personal History
Early years:
The baby of the Deron family, Eliaan had a happy childhood on Betazed. He was surrounded by loving family and older siblings who doted on him. As a child he was particularly close to his brother, whom he hero worshipped. His mother wrote a book on the development of children, which included many anecdotes about Eliaan and would embarrass him greatly as he got older.
Education:
Great things were expected from the youngest Deron. Despite being clever in his own right, he never quite matched the intellectual ability of his siblings. He worked incredibly hard to achieve top grades; although in later life he would recognise that in order to do this he missed out in a lot of normal experiences.

Professional History
Starfleet Academy:
Eliaan was accepted to Starfleet Academy on his first attempt and began study with a major in exobiology and a minor in astrophysics. He greatly enjoyed his time as an undergraduate, making a close group of friends and finally feeling free of the expectations of his family. A good, rather than exceptional student, he graduated in the top ten percent of his class and was accepted to the Starfleet Medical post-graduate program.
Starfleet Medical:
The transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study was not an easy one for Eliaan and in the first year he struggled to maintain his grades. As all of his friends had accepted commissions and were on their first postings, the support network he had built up over the previous four years was gone.
Although not on his official record, for a time he was using stimulants in order to stay focused and study. He became depressed and was close to washing out of the program. His dramatic change in attitude was spotted by one of his professors who, in an attempt to help him decide whether he wanted to be a doctor or not, arranged for him to volunteer in the field during a planet wide outbreak on the Napean colony Vilar 2.
He spent three months working with Starfleet Medical colleagues and Napean doctors during the outbreak. This was a truly life changing experience for the young Betazoid. He discovered that he truly loved medicine but was more suited to trauma medicine than surgery and switched specialties. With a new sense of purpose, he completed medical school.

USS Resolution
Following a final cadet cruise aboard the USS Centris-A and graduation, Deron was assigned to the USS Resolution under the command of Commander Toni Turner. During his first mission, the Resolution was sent to Lavon, the homeworld of the newly warp-capable Zalinians who were in the middle of an unexplained outbreak. Deron was assigned to an away team assigned to discover the cause and potential treatment for the mysterious illnesses. Deron discovered that the Zalinian government had banned the use of their telekinetic powers, which had an unforeseen effect on their immune systems and caused them to be susceptible to disease. Following this discovery, the Zalinians began using their telekinesis again and the illness stopped.
As this mission was wrapping up, a number of Resolution officers were attacked by Hirogen hunters. Deron was forced to perform life saving surgery on two of his colleagues. Following the transfer of Dr Brenna Parker to Starfleet Medical, Commander Turner offered the position of Acting Chief Medical Officer to Deron.
Psychological Evaluation
Final Academy Psychological Evaluation – Cadet Eliaan Deron
Evaluation conducted by Lt Kaleena Arda
I have had the pleasure of several meetings with Cadet Eliaan Deron during his time at Starfleet medical and I have found him a pleasant, personable young man. A major facet of Cadet Deron’s personality that I noticed immediately during our first session is his eagerness to please those around him. He believes that if he is able to impress others (particularly superiors) with his actions or, it will make them like him.
I believe this is a result of his family life. From his own description, Cadet Deron grew up in a home where worth was measured in achievements. His difficult relationship with his father has left him terrified of disappointing anyone. He therefore places a great deal of pressure upon himself to match up to the achievements of his family, especially his older siblings and the expectations that he assumes others have of him.
I have found a dramatic difference in Cadet Deron since his temporary assignment on Vilar 2. In many ways, he seemed considerably younger that his age before this time. He returned from this assignment, more mature and surer of his own abilities.
Having engaged in his first serious relationship, Cadet Deron suffered a very traumatic loss while on Vilar 2. In general, he remains reluctant to talk about this and I have seen benefit when trying to press him on the subject. He has reported bouts of depression, which I believe are a normal part of the grieving process. I would hope that in time, he is able to discuss this more freely with a Counsellor he trusts, accepting that he may not wish to discuss such issues during an Academy psychological evaluation.
At several points during our discussions, I wondered who was evaluating who. Cadet Deron has an interesting habit of making it seem like you are talking about him but in fact he’s not giving anything away and is steering the conversation back to how you feel or think. He is very reluctant to give too much away, although in my own experience he became more engaged during our later sessions.
While the issues described above are pertinent to Cadet Deron’s psychological wellbeing, I believe they will have little effect on his ability to act as a Starfleet officer or a physician. I hereby certify that Cadet Eliaan Deron is mentally fit for duty and wish him well in his future endeavours.
