Rhakuz was donated to the Imperial Kazleti as a "gift" for their fealty. The planet is cold and harsh, with dramatic seasonal changes. The two moons give rise to relatively bright nights, high tides and significant volcanic activity. The high oxygen content of the atmosphere makes fire a major hazard, and the Imperial Kazleti lead the way on fire retardant materials and safety systems, many of which have been incorporated into the ships of the Klingon Defence Force.

The Kazleti are species originally native to the planet Kazletzin in the Piavon Regalias Sector.

This article concerns the Kazleti who chose to become a subject species of the Klingon Empire, often known as the Imperial Kazleti. Information on the Federation-aligned Kazleti may be found on the Kazleti (Federal) article.

After a catastrophic natural disaster four hundred years ago that forced the evacuation of their homeworld, the Kazleti had since become a divided race, with one faction joining the Federation, and the other the Klingon Empire.

History

Originating from the world of Kazletzin, directly in the middle of what would become Klingon Neutral Zone, the Kazleti were forced to evacuate their original homeworld 350 years ago when a natural disaster slowly rendered the planet uninhabitable. This event has since become known as "The Sundering" in Kazleti history.

The hastily-constructed evacuation armanda was slow, requiring the Kazleti to choose between trying to find safe haven with the nearby, nascent Klingon Empire, or commit to a long and uncertain journey through the stars.

Many chose to swear fealty to Klingon Empire, and the Kazleti became one of their most prominent subject species. Granted a harsh, barely habitable world to colonise by their new rulers, they survived and thrived on both the planet and in the Empire by emphasising their existing warrior culture. These Kazleti are known as bold warrior-poets, renowned for their skills in language and battle.

A second group struck out in the opposite direction, wishing to determine their own destiny instead of choosing who would dictate it to them. During the long journey, these Kazleti were forced to cooperate and overcome the old clan antagonisms, developing into a unified, cohesive culture. 200 years after setting out, they located and settled their new homeworld.

Between the original evacuation and the signing of the Khitomer Accords, the two groups of Kazleti were essentially isolated from one another. Though there are some parallels between the two, time and distance have conspired to create two distinct and very separate societies.

Government

The Imperial Kazleti possess a unified planetary government in the form of a stratocratic confederation named "The Host". The individual sovereign states are known as "Clans", and conflict is common among them, resulting in slow and inefficient governance. There is mounting political pressure to convert to a federal system, though negotiations are protracted and subject to strong resistance from some quarters, who do not wish to relinquish their sovereignty.

Their society is highly militarised, and only those who have completed at least one tour of service in the military are permitted to vote and hold government office. While some Clans make exceptions for those who unable to serve due to medical conditions, discrimination against those who have not is common and in some instances, enshrined within the law.

Education

The Imperial Kazleti have earned a reputation as warrior-scholars, and make significant contributions to the ongoing scientific and technological progress of the Klingon Empire. The pursuit of knowledge is highly-regarded, and eminent scientists are as celebrated and revered as their great warriors.

Culture

Language

The Kazleti as a species are renowned for their incredibly complex languages. The most common language of Karutin is known for its liquid, musical sound, but is near indecipherable for many translators, organic or otherwise. Karutin shares many of the most common aspects of various Kalzeti languages, though not all of them, and its vocabulary and grammar are most like the Kantenkenese language, though there are significant contributions by High Beuldaerian, Dilzin, and Vocakhaelin.

Imperial Kazleti rarely speak their own languages away from their own worlds, with Klingon and other trade languages taking precedent. There is a strong tradition of ensuring Kazleti children are educated in multiple languages from birth, and many are fluent in at least two Kazleti languages -- one of which is always Karutin -- as well as Klingon from a young age.

Karutin is a prime example of how Kazleti languages typically have two to three styles of speech that vary based on social context. All of these styles have their own grammatical rules, vocabulary and pronunciation. In Karutin, there are 3 'tones' that correspond with increasing formality.

  • Nara: The first tone is the informal tone. It is used by friends and family, and is the tone of everyday life. It may also be spoken by those in a superior social position, to those in an inferior position, if they wish to emphasise their standing.
  • Hnkisu: The second tone is somewhere between formal and informal. It is commonly used in the workplace between colleagues, or by people who do not know one another in an informal setting.
  • Nehuar: The third and the most formal tone is used in public speeches, formal announcements and official documents. It is also used as a show of respect by people with an inferior social status to those in a superior one.

There are also certain nuances to the vocabulary used in each tone, for instance one never uses the most formal words to refer to oneself, and certain words, even expressions, are reserved for specific tones.

Art

The Imperial Kazleti hold literary and musical forms of art in high regard, particularly poetry and opera, and the study of these is extensively incorporated into the education system.
