When Maria married Galrisan, she abandoned her maiden name, as Galrisan did not have one. This is why Seze has no family name. Seze grew up as a normal Orion boy. At the age of 19, he got in trouble selling illegals, but escaped police onto an Orion slave ship. He spent the next year living there until the ship came across Federation ships. Seze's ship attacked, fearing that the Federation would try to stop them from continuing their business. Seze knew that they never should have attacked and abandoned the ship when he attempted to stop the commander, but couldn't. He shot out in an escape pod, and floated around for a while, until the Federation ship beamed him aboard. He exited the pod and told them that he was not a part of the slave ship which had just attacked them. He was taken to the Captain who granted him a room on the ship, albeit with security. As they returned to a StarBase, Seze began to highly respect the Starfleet officers. When they got to the StarBase, and Seze was moved off of the ship, he lived the life of a civilian for a while. He studied hard, and was accepted into the academy at the age of 21. He moved from Starfleet Academy to Starfleet Medical Academy, and finally finished at the age of 25, beginning his final cruise on the USS Centris-A.
